Admission to Dickinson College is highly competitive, and many factors are considered by the admissions committee.

We enroll students who show enthusiasm toward becoming part of the Dickinson community. Successful students show potential for contributing significantly to our community, both inside and outside the classroom. Those students demonstrate the promise of becoming engaged in the world at large by contributing to society, yet remaining connected to our college community.

We hope to become acquainted with you during the admissions process, getting to know you rather than simply reviewing your credentials. This does not mean you must visit the Dickinson campus. As much as we would love to have you visit, we are aware this is not easy for many international students. However, we encourage you to contact us by telephone, letter or e-mail. By the time you are ready to make your decision about where to apply and enroll, we want you to have a personal relationship with Dickinson College.

Of course, your credentials are an important piece of the admissions decision. Through personal contact, we expect to gain a comprehensive impression of your personal and academic qualifications. The credentials we carefully review include:

  • secondary school academic record, to determine the quality of your school and the courses you have taken
  • extracurricular activities, including your leadership roles and awards related to these activities
  • essays, which help us review your writing skills and allow us to know you even better
  • recommendations from your guidance counselor, adviser or principal and teachers, to better understand how you are viewed in your school’s environment
  • SAT or ACT scores, if you intend to apply for financial aid
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to measure your English-language skills
  • International Student Financial Aid Application, to request consideration for aid
  • and the Declaration and Certification of Finances, which all international students, regardless of whether or not they are applying for financial aid, are required to submit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Dickinson different?
The mission of Dickinson College is to prepare students, by means of a useful education in the liberal arts and sciences, for engaged lives of citizenship and leadership in the service of society.

So what does this mean to you? It means:

  • classrooms filled with challenging, controversial and socially pertinent conversations
  • the opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture, be it in Carlisle or in another country during a study-abroad experience
  • the expectation that you will emerge from your college experience as a more holistic and engaged human being
  • and having the support system to remind you that you can make a difference in this world.

What is Dickinson known for?
Besides our proud history and strong academics, Dickinson is known for its global outlook. When you come to our Carlisle campus to start your college education, you'll quickly learn that we encourage our students to step beyond the limestone walls of our home base. As a result, the dynamics of the campus constantly are changing and growing as students return with newly formed opinions and ideas as a result of abroad experiences, exchange programs, classroom excursions and internships.

Can I transfer from a foreign college/university to Dickinson?
Yes—international students are welcome to transfer to Dickinson. In addition to a completed application form, certification of finances and secondary-school transcripts, transfer students must provide official transcripts for all completed college coursework, a statement indicating the reason for transfer, at least one recommendation from a professor and evidence of good academic and nonacademic standing as indicated by the Dean's Report Form or similar official statement. The application deadlines are April 1 for fall semester and November 1 for spring semester.

Do you accept transfer credits from non-U.S. universities?
Any student who has matriculated at a university must apply as a transfer. There is no guarantee that university coursework will be transferable. A student who has taken classes at a university outside of the United States is required to have university transcripts officially translated and evaluated by World Education Services (WES) as part of the Dickinson College application process. WES is an international academic-credit evaluation agency. Dickinson College requires the Comprehensive Course-by-Course Report. For more information on transfer admission and credits, visit: <www.dickinson.edu/admit/transfer>.

What can I expect from Dickinson?
Dickinson College will challenge you. You will learn more about yourself and your beliefs by going beyond your accustomed boundaries. You'll think differently as a result of your liberal-arts education as you begin to see the world and all of its components as interconnected.

Where is Carlisle, Pennsylvania?
