Tips for Completing Your Dickinson Application
Now that you have researched Dickinson thoroughly and have decided to apply, it is our turn to learn more about you and your opportunity to advocate for yourself and your fit with Dickinson, through your application. The following tips can aid you as you fill out the Dickinson Application and will help prevent delays and confusion in the processing of your application, credentials and supporting documents.

Forms
Dickinson College uses the Common Application and requires the Dickinson Supplement to the Common Application. We recommend that you apply online at: http://app.commonapp.org. If you are sending your application materials electronically, inform your school representatives that they may send their recommendations and transcript via fax or e-mail attachment.

You can also find all necessary application forms, including the complete Dickinson Admission Application, the Declaration and Certification of Finances form and the International Student Financial Aid Application at: www.dickinson.edu/international/intesforms.html.

Reminder: If you currently are enrolled in another undergraduate institution you must apply as a transfer student and complete a Transfer Application. For more information on Transfer Admissions, visit: www.dickinson.edu/admit/transfer.

Name

  • Always write your full name in the same order on all forms and correspondence. If you prefer to use a nickname, always be sure to include your full name as written in your official documents.
  • Use all capitals when writing your family name (surname/last name) so we are sure to distinguish it from your given name.
  • If you notice in correspondence that we have recorded your name incorrectly, please let us know immediately.
  • Please check to ensure that the name used on all your application materials (including those coming from your school or from standardized-testing centers) is the same. If there is a discrepancy, your materials could be placed in the wrong file, and this could delay the completion of your application.

Birth Date
Please list your date of birth using the month/day/year (for example, 07/18/1989).

Social Security Number
If you do not have a social security number (this is issued to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and others who have held jobs in the United States), leave this blank. We will assign you an identification number.

E-mail Address
Because of time difference, e-mail is the quickest and easiest mode of communication. Be sure to use the same e-mail address in your application as you have been using to communicate with us prior to your application submission. If you use a different e-mail account in your application or if it changes at any time, please let us know.

Admission Plan
Be sure to select the same application plan for the Common Application and the Dickinson Supplement Form. A discrepancy may cause your application to be reviewed in a different application round than you desired, which could affect your chances for admission. If you choose to apply Early Decision 1 or 2, you must submit the complete Early Decision Agreement Form. We cannot consider your application as Early Decision until we receive the completed agreement form including all required signatures. For more details on the different application options, visit www.dickinson.edu/international/brochure_AppOptions.html.

Financial Aid
If you cannot completely fund the cost of your education, be sure to check "yes" here. Otherwise, our aid will go to other applicants. Regardless of whether you are applying for financial aid, you must submit the Declaration and Certification of Finances Form. We will not make a decision until we have received this form with a certified bank statement. In addition, if you are applying for aid, you will also be required to submit the International Student Financial Aid Application. Your application will not be complete until we receive both of these forms. For details regarding Financial Aid and help with completing these forms, visit www:dickinson.edu/international/brochure_FinAid.html.

Note: International students are not eligible for U.S. military's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) scholarships.

Field of Study and Professional Advising
It is not necessary for you to select a major area of study until the end of your second year at Dickinson. However, we do want to know the areas that interest you most. This is helpful as we provide you with information about Dickinson and our programs. Selecting a major or professional advising track does not commit you to that program in any way.

Test Information

If you do not want us to consider your standarized test results when we review your application, indicate that here. However, you must submit test scores if you wish to be considered for a merit scholarship or need-based financial aid. Indicating that you do not want your standardized test results considered does not exclude required submission of the TOEFL results. If you are submitting test information, please note in the testing area the date of the tests you have taken or plan to take, and any score results.

Remember that your certified test results should arrive by the application deadline you have chosen. We can only consider those that arrive before final decisions are made. For more details on standardized testing, visit www.dickinson.edu/international/brochure)StandardTest.html

Rohan Sen.

When he encountered difficulties filling out his application forms, Rohan, fourth-year student from India, went straight to the source. “The international admissions office was a great help to me. I remember e-mailing them hundreds of questions and getting a reply for each and every one of them. Something that makes Dickinson different is its personalized approach to students.”

Recommendations, School Report and Transcript
After filling in your portion of all forms that are to be completed by school officials, including the school report, transcript and recommendations, distribute them to the appropriate people. Your teachers and counselors will appreciate it if you allow them sufficient time to complete the forms. Follow up with them to be sure they are completing the forms and getting them to us before your application deadline. Your transcript should show all classes and results up to the time of your application deadline. The mid-year report is to update your application on the results of your class work and exams after the middle of your academic year, especially if you receive any new results before the final decision is made on your application.

All of your recommendations and transcripts must be translated into English before being sent to us. These translations must be certified as official translations and must be exact, not interpretations.

CEEB Number: The CEEB number is a school identification number assigned to schools by the College Board. You may research your school's CEEB number at www.collegeboard.com/sat/html/students/codelist.html If your school does not have this number, leave it blank.

Essays
When writing your personal statement in the Common Application, the topic you choose is less important than the way you develop it. Help us understand you better by providing information about yourself that we might not get from the rest of your application. When writing your Required Statement in the Dickinson Supplement Form, read each question carefully and take time to articulate specifically why you are applying to Dickinson as well as how you think your goals, character, interests and contributions specifically fit into the Dickinson community.

It is important that you write these essays yourself. We want you to suceed if you join the Dickinson community, and we need to make our admission decision with a complete understanding of your English proficiency.

Application Submission Methods

It is important that your COMPLETED application, including the Common Application, Dickinson Supplement, essays, recommendations, transcript, and school report, TOEFL, SAT, or ACT results, Declaration and Certification Finances form, and the International Student Financial Aid Application (if applying for aid), arrive at Dickinson and be processed before your chosen application deadline.

It is highly recommended that you apply online and send the rest of your application materials via fax or e-mail (scanned and attached). Your school can send the school documents and recommendations in this way as well. Avoiding the use of the postal mailing system will reduce the risk of late arrival and lost paperwork and ensure a more accurate and prompt processing of your Dickinson Application.

If your situation requires you to use postal mail, it is best to use a traceable courier service, such as DHL, FedEx or UPS, and send well in advance of your application deadline. Copy your entire application packet, in case anything is lost in mailing or processing, and let us know via e-mail when and how you have mailed your application materials.
