Dickinson Welcomes International Students!

Welcome to Dickinson College
Becoming a part of the Dickinson community means joining a team of outstanding students and dedicated faculty members committed to the continuous study of and engagement with other cultures and societies. The close-knit environment at the college encourages self-expression and growth, while fostering an understanding and appreciation for the diversity of people who surround us.

International Honor Roll:

  • 2006—Time magazine's August 21 cover story, "Who Needs Harvard?", quotes a counselor from a highly selective private school in La Jolla, CA, who observes that sophisticated students searching for the right college "see that schools like....Dickinson really care about the quality of undergraduate life."
  • 2003—Dickinson is chosen by NAFSA: Association of International Educators in a nationwide competition as one of six institutions in the country that has best internationalized its campus.
  • 2001—The Wall Street Journal includes Dickinson in a list of 16 "hot schools" that are "poised to be players in the new landscape."

A Chance to be Yourself
Because nearly 60 percent of Dickinson students take advantage of our 40 highly regarded study-abroad programs, we believe a global perspective is a defining characteristic of our students. Students are challenged each day to cross borders between cultures and academic disciplines and to stretch themselves in preparation for life in a complex world.

As a result, you will find Dickinson to be an extraordinarily welcoming place to international students and visitors. Joining Dickinson will give you not just a perspective on the United States but on the global community.

You’ll discover that many of the courses are “international” in flavor and point of view. We offer 12 languages - including Arabic, Chinese, Modern Greek and Japanase - and interdisciplinary majors in East Asian studies, Italian, Latin American, and Russian-area studies, international studies, and international business and managment.

At Dickinson, your presense and viewpoint are welcome additions to our community.

Creating Connections
Do you want to speak to someone who knows your first language? Chances are you’ll find someone here. In 2003, Dickinson College was first in the percentage of foreign-language degrees awarded among 146 peer schools. Students and faculty members also join together each week for engaging discussions in a language other than English.

Making Leaders
Because of their expertise in languages and knowledge of foreign cultures, graduates often become Peace Corps volunteers. Currently 14 alumni serve around the world, making Dickinson a regional leader for the Peace Corps. Dickinson students also frequently are awarded Fulbright scholarships. Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program increases mutual understanding between the United States and other countries through the exchange of people, knowledge and skills.

Some of the places that international students from Dickinson recently have interned with include the Inter-American Development Bank and Women for Women International, both in Washington D.C., New York Life (insurer) and UNICEF, both in New York City, McLagan Partners in Stamford, CT, Janney Montgomery Scott LLC in Philadelphia, HSBC Investments in Taipei, Taiwan, and the Institute of Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Tania Berkowitz.

“Being an international student at Dickinson has given me opportunities I never thought about before,” says third-year student Tania Berkowitz of Chile. “I feel that, here, everything is possible if you look for it. The life as a student inside and outside the classroom is incredible. Coming here has been one of the best choices of my life.”

Crossing Borders
Because we operate more than 40 programs in 24 countries on six continents, you’ll likely find students who have been in or near your home country. At the heart of our study-abroad network are centers in Australia, Cameroon, China, England, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia and Spain. Dickinson's Community Studies Center sponsors research in Patagonian oil towns, and professors working together across disciplines create programs that have taken students to places as diverse as Antarctica and Galápagos Islands.

Experiencing America
But first on the agenda will be getting to know the United States. Dickinson is a great campus at which to experience the all-American small town with its rural surroundings and safe, close-knit campus.

Its location offers access to the biggest cities and attractions in Pennsylvania and the United States. Once in the United States, you’ll want to explore our side of the world. Students frequently take inexpensive trips to East Coast cities like New York City, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. And, don’t forget to visit other towns in different states and countries with friends you will meet at Dickinson.

Getting Involved on Campus
Because college is not always about the classroom, what happens outside of the classroom is often as important as what happens inside. You can:

  • participate in sports such as tennis, baseball, cricket, ping pong, American football and football (soccer to Americans)
  • join faculty, students and other members of the Dickinson community at our language tables and international films.
  • share your musical interests by hosting a show on our own radio station, WDCV
  • hone your computer skills as a member of our Mathematics and Computer Science Society
  • hit the slopes as a member of our Ski Club
  • take part in our many multicultural student organizations, from the Latin American Club to the Middle Eastern Club to the ASIA Club to Hillel.

The opportunities are endless.

Explore our Web site at www.dickinson.edu, contact faculty members, connect with a current student who can share his or her experinece, and be sure to ask questions.
