Strategic Planning Meeting Updates

October 2015

Strategic Planning Monthly Update – October 1, 2015

The purpose of these monthly updates is to regularly share the work of the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) with the college and extended community.

Progress with regard to our timeline: September was designated as our period to get organized. These organizational activities have been completed:

  • The process and broad timeline were announced to the college community.
  • A website has been developed for the college community to assist with transparency.
  • An email account, planning@dickinson.edu, has been set up to enable the college and extended community to share ideas, questions and concerns with the SPC. This email account supports our goal of making strategic planning an inclusive process.
  • The SPC was created and held its first meeting. The SPC will review Strategic Plans I, II and III at its first October meeting.

Report of SPC meeting: The Strategic Planning Committee met for the first time last week and enjoyed a lively and engaging discussion on the planning process and next steps. After President Roseman addressed the committee, we had a provocative exchange of ideas and perspectives on what strategic planning is, how we do it well, and, most critically, how we engage every person on the campus in the process. We noted that we have multiple vehicles for capturing everyone’s ideas and questions and that the SPC members are a valuable resource for achieving our goals of transparency, inclusion and representation. Please feel free to talk with any SPC member about the strategic plan and this work. If you would like to have a committee member attend a meeting to talk with a particular group, please let us know or invite a committee member directly.

Upcoming work:

  1. Constituency meetings at which you and your immediate peers can discuss, ask questions and share ideas at the outset of this year’s strategic planning work. (These are the only meetings currently structured by constituency. All other meetings will be open across constituencies.)
  2. Schedule for constituency meetings:

Students – Tuesday, Oct. 6, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in HUB Social Hall
    Support staff – Monday, Oct. 5, 1:30-2:45 p.m. in Althouse 106 and Friday, Oct. 9, 10:30-11:45 a.m. in ATS
    Administrators – Monday, Oct. 5, 12:00-1:15 p.m. in Althouse 106
    Faculty – Thursday, Oct. 15, 12:00-1:15 p.m. in ATS

  3. All-College Mission/Vision/Values meetings provide the opportunity to discuss the college’s identity:
  4. Mission – What is our primary purpose? What do we do?
Vision – To what do we aspire?
Values – What fundamental values serve as the foundation for the work of our college?

    Schedule for M/V/V meetings:
    Wednesday, Oct. 7, 12:00-1:15 p.m. in ATS
    Thursday, Oct. 8, 5:00-6:15 p.m. in ATS
    Friday, Oct. 9, 8:45-10:00 a.m. in ATS

These discussions of Dickinson’s mission, vision and values inform our strategic plan.

  5. As a way to encourage engagement and broad participation, the committee will be posing a question via email to the college community twice a month—first question next week. We look forward to your feedback!

Reminders: The SPC encourages participation by the college at our college-wide meetings. We also encourage people to send their ideas and questions to us at planning@dickinson.edu.
