James C. Greenwood ’73

For five terms U.S. Rep. James C. Greenwood ’73 has served as congressman for Pennsylvania’s eighth district, comprised of Bucks County and a portion of Montgomery County. During his career as a public servant, Greenwood has embodied the Dickinson ideal of “citizen-leader.”

A lifelong resident of Bucks County, Greenwood graduated from Dickinson with a bachelor’s degree in social science and sociology. From 1977 to 1980, he worked as a social worker with abused and neglected children at the Bucks County Children and Youth Social Services Agency.

The Republican congressman served six years in the Pennsylvania General Assembly (1980-86) and six years in the Pennsylvania Senate (1986-93), specializing in health, the environment and children’s issues. He has been active in community-service organizations, serving on the boards of groups such as the Bucks County Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Bucks County. He also has been recognized with dozens of awards in appreciation of his dedication to local and national causes.

In the U.S. House of Representatives, Greenwood serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee as chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigation. As subcommittee chairman, he has led investigations and held hearings on a variety of topics from bioterrorism to the safety of nuclear-power plants to corporate governance. He gained national exposure through his leadership role in the investigation of Enron, the Houston-based energy behemoth that experienced the most dramatic corporate collapse in American history.

As a member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, Greenwood has been a leading voice in the efforts to ensure that sufficient federal funding is available to meet the needs of children enrolled in special education programs and to prevent school violence.

Greenwood lives in Erwinna, Pa., with his wife, Tina, and their three children, Rob, Laura and Katie.
