Students hiking

Dickinson is situated in the beautiful Cumberland Valley home to a section of the Appalachian Trail, famous trout creeks, and historic state forests. Outdoor Education at Dickinson aims to introduce Dickinson students, faculty, and staff to the recreational and educational opportunities provided by these natural resources. The program is housed in Campus Recreational Program in Student Leadership and Campus Engagement. 

Outdoor Education programs include the Dickinson Rock Wall in the Kline Center, Wilderness Introduction to Life at Dickinson (WILD) pre-orientation programs, outdoor leadership and skill workshops, and alternative break trips

Summer 2017 Schedule

All outings are open to students, faculty & staff.  Some are even open to guests (will be noted in the description).  Summer is a great time to explore Carlisle and the surrounding areas!  Join us for a fun adventure and learn new skills!

Intro to Fishing

Spend the evening at a local farm learning how to fish from our skilled instructor in the ponds on the property.  We'll also grill hot dogs and provide dinner!

Dinner Hike to Pole Steeple

Join us for a hike up Pole Steeple for a great view overlooking Laurel Lake.  The hike is about 2 miles roundtrip.  We will make and enjoy dinner on the top of Pole Steeple!

Weds. 7/12

Dinner Hike to White Rock Acres

Join us for a hike at White Rock Acres near Boiling Springs.  We'll hike about 3.5 miles roundtrip to Center Hill Knob for a great overlook of the valley.  We will make and enjoy dinner at the veiwpoint!  This is a fun trail that goes along a rocky ridge.

Whitewater Rafting and Hiking Weekend

We will travel to Ohiopyle, PA for some great whitewater rafting and hiking!  The area is incredibly beautiful and an outdoor recreation paradise.  We'll raft class 1-3 rapids on Saturday, camp in tents and enjoy some waterfalls, swimming and hiking on Sunday.  All fees, food and transportation are included.  Sleeping bags, sleeping pads and headlamps are availalbe to borrow free of charge from the Gear Box.
