Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Office 365?

Office 365 is the title for a bundle of locally-installed software and online services which are all interconnected. The software and services provided with Office 365 are:

  • Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus for Windows (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Access, and Publisher) and/or Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) for installation on up to 5 personal computers.
  • Mobile app versions of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote) on up to 5 personal tablets (iPads, Windows tablets, Androids, etc.) or phones (iPhones, Windows phones, Androids, etc.).
  • Web versions of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote) accessed via a web browser with real-time co-authoring and collaboration.
  • 1 Terabyte of OneDrive cloud storage **.
** Microsoft OneDrive is file storage space on a Microsoft server. You may store any type of files on your OneDrive space (i.e. zip files, audio files, video files, PDFs, etc.), not just Microsoft Office documents (.docx, .xlsx, etc.). Please note that OneDrive space is not backed up (by Microsoft or Dickinson) and thus, any files deleted from OneDrive are NOT recoverable.

2. How does Office 365 relate to the Microsoft Office I already have on my Dickinson computer?
All computers in employee offices and classrooms currently have Microsoft Office (either for Windows or for Mac).  The versions of Microsoft Office which are included with Office 365 are the same as the versions on campus but, as all campus systems already have Office installed, these copies are for use on your personal computers.

3. Who may use Office 365?
Current Dickinson Employees and Students are eligible to use the software and services provided in Office 365 free of charge on their home and personal computers.
If you are an alumni member or former employee and wish to use Office 365, you may visit the Microsoft Store and purchase a subscription to Office 365 for your personal use.

4. What happens if I have installed Microsoft Office one or more of my personal computers and I leave the College or graduate?
As the copies of Microsoft Office which are available to you on your personal computers via Office 365 under the Dickinson agreement are only for current employees and students, the College must remove the licenses from those copies when you leave Dickinson. At that time, the software will remain on your computer(s) but, as the license has been removed, Microsoft Office will revert to a trail mode wherein you may only open and print documents and it will not allow you to edit or create new files. How to Sync and make copies of my files and folders from my OneDrive.

5. What happens to the files in my OneDrive space when I leave the College or graduate?
As your Microsoft Office 365 account is tied to your Dickinson account, you will lose access to your OneDrive space once your Dickinson account is disabled or moved to alumni status.  Please be sure to download all files from your OneDrive space prior to leaving the College.
