Spanish & Portuguese majors often study abroad, and Dickinson offers several programs that provide rich, immersive experiences for majors.
Dickinson in Spain (Málaga)
A comprehensive program that focuses on Spanish language and literature, culture, and society and includes internships and courses in economics and international business. Program participants have the opportunity to sample courses offered at the Teatinos campus of the Universidad de Málaga, which has eight schools and institutes and more than 50,000 students. Málaga Summer Immersion
This five-week program allows students to expand their linguistic ability and develop cultural awareness of the Hispanic world. While living in Málaga, students will also acquire an understanding of the history and culture of a Hispanic civilization.
Dickinson in Ecuador and Argentina
This program offers the unique opportunity to live and study in both Argentina and Ecuador. First, students take a course in Cuenca that focuses on Spanish language immersion as well as Ecuadorian and Andean history and culture. Second, students travel to Mendoza, where they take classes to reinforce their Spanish and another to learn about Argentina's culture, history, politics, and philosophy. Dickinson in Brazil (São Paulo)
Students on the Brazil program have the best of all worlds - immersion in Brazilian culture and the Portuguese language, direct enrollment at the University of São Paulo (Universidade de São Paulo, USP), and the support they need to navigate Brazils biggest city and thrive at its most prestigious university. Students do this through the support of on-site staff, a pre-semester, intensive Portuguese course, a homestay experience, and a Dickinson core course that helps students grapple with the complexities of Brazil from an interdisciplinary perspective. Dickinson in Brazil is offered in cooperation with CET Academic Programs.
Points to Keep in Mind Before and After Studying Abroad
What should I do before I go abroad, to ensure that my credits will transfer?
Students should meet and discuss their off-campus plans with their academic advisor(s) and credit officer prior to leaving Carlisle. Currently, the credit officer is Prof. Jorge R. G. Sagastume
Should I do anything while I'm abroad, to ensure that my credits will transfer?
Yes. You should maintain e-mail contact with your academic advisor(s) and credit officer while you're abroad, especially during the first weeks of the semester when you are in the process of finalizing your course schedule. Your advisor(s) and credit officer need to confirm the courses you’ve selected will transfer upon returning to Dickinson.
What should I keep in mind when registering for classes abroad?
- Only liberal-arts classes will qualify for transfer credit.
- Transfer credit will not be awarded for coursework that duplicates what you have already completed at Dickinson. Do consult, always, with your advisor(s) and credit officer.
- You must take a normal full load of classes as defined by your host program or institution.
Will the grades I earn abroad be included in my Dickinson GPA?
Grades for Dickinson courses taught at Centers in Málaga, Quito, and Mendoza are included in your GPA, regardless of the grade earned.
Grades for courses taken at a partner institution are recorded on your transcript but are not included in the GPA.
What should I do upon returning from studying abroad?
Upon return to campus, you must complete the Enrollment in Another Institution Form
Please, note that this form is required whether you are seeking major, minor, distribution, or general credit. After obtaining the required signatures from the credit officer and your advisor(s), you should take the form to the Center for Global Study and Engagement for approval. The form will then be forwarded to the Registrar's Office. Students should work directly with their host program to ensure that an official transcript is sent to the Registrar's Office as soon as possible after the program has ended.
