Olivia was awarded a Fulbright Research Scholarship to Germany to pursue interdisciplinary research in astrochemistry. “Eventually, I anticipate using my interdisciplinary background in a faculty position to inspire students to be creative and pursue their passions, no matter how out of this world they may be,” she said.

In 2014, Olivia was awarded a Goldwater Scholarship by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program, which fosters and encourages excellence in science and mathematics by providing financial assistance for highly qualified individuals to contribute to their education and research in the sciences.

What is Olivia most anticipating about her post-graduation plans? “I am excited to pursue interdisciplinary astrochemistry research, first at the University of Cologne through my Fulbright Scholarship to Germany and then in a chemistry Ph.D. program.”

Caroline, a Baird Sustainability Fellow, has received a Fulbright research grant to Kazakhstan. “This summer, I will intern with the public-policy department at Ceres, a nonprofit based in Boston that unites businesses to advocate for corporate social responsibility, clean energy and other such practices,” she says. “In September, I will move to Almaty, Kazakhstan to research Soviet urban planning and environmentalism.” Caroline’s research project is titled “Access to Green Space in Almaty’s ‘Garden City.’” She credits Professor Alyssa DeBlasio for encouraging her to apply for the Fulbright grant.

How has Dickinson prepared Caroline for Life Beyond the Limestone? “Dickinson provides amazing opportunities for people to pursue whatever they’re interested in—whether it’s a foreign language or sustainability—at any point in their academic career,” she says. “Although I didn’t come into Dickinson knowing what I wanted to do aside from study Russian, all of my professors were consistently supportive and helped me to explore different options. In the past year, I did two independent studies with professors I knew through extracurricular activities. I also think that Dickinson’s study-abroad programs are among the best that truly open doors for you all over the world.”

Anna was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Germany, where she will spend a year as a cultural ambassador and teacher helping German students learn about the English language.

What are some of the defining moments of Anna’s Dickinson Experience? “Dickinson truly supports intensive learning: whether abroad or in Carlisle,” she says. “Few schools really facilitate year-long, immersive study abroad programs to the extent that Dickinson does,” she says. “Also, few schools support students in integrating sustainability, social entrepreneurship and innovation, as Dickinson has for me through the Idea Fund.”

How has Dickinson prepared Jane for Life Beyond the Limestone? “Dickinson has prepared me with its international focus. Had you asked me four years ago, I never could have dreamed that I would study abroad for a year, let alone receive a Fulbright. Dickinson made me believe it was possible,” she said. “The interaction I had one-on-one with professors was crucial to my personal and academic development, and challenged me to take risks even before I thought I was ready. I feel so grateful to be part of this campus community and I have enjoyed all the years of attending various lectures and events in different disciplines because that has broadened my understanding of the world.”

Eric, a member of the award-winning Mock Trial Team, which recently emerged undefeated from the American Mock Trial Association’s Regional Mock Trial Tournament in Pittsburgh, was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Germany, where he will provide English language instruction at a German high school. What is Eric most anticipating about his post-graduation plans? “I’m most eagerly anticipating the opportunity to be immersed in another culture and to share my own culture and language in an educational context,” he says. “I’ve always loved teaching language, so to be able to do it formally for an academic year is especially exciting to me.”
