Another defining moment was my study-abroad semester in Germany. SCHF is dedicated to empowering urban youth to develop healthy bodies, hearts, and minds, and ultimately to emerge as leaders and prepare for fulfilling lives after high school. The camp experience is the point of departure of our work: every summer, over 120 underserved urban teens spend twelve days at a beautiful working farm in upstate New York. Lauren, who as a sophomore co-founded the Dickinson Dog House, an Idea Fund initiative that has students committed to housing and raising puppies to become service dogs for people with disabilities, has taken a position with Keystone Human Services in Harrisburg as a dog trainer. She will work with Susquehanna Service Dogs, an Assistance Dogs International (ADI) accredited service-dog school and will be responsible for training dogs in the advanced-training program for specialized placement with a partner with a disability. She will work with puppy raisers, lead puppy classes and conduct canine evaluations to ensure that dogs are of the highest quality for placement. Finally, she will work directly with clients during team training sessions to teach both the dog and human partner to work together as a team in order to mediate the client’s disability so that they can live more independently. Brooke will join Blue Engine as a teaching assistant. Blue Engine partners with public high schools serving low-income communities to increase academic rigor and prepare dramatically greater numbers of students for postsecondary success. Brooke will be part of a team of 3-4 Blue Engine Teaching Assistants (BETAs). “With a lead teacher, my team will be responsible for supporting approximately 100 students in a public high school in New York City,” Brooke says. “We will collect student data to monitor learning, track progress and inform our instruction. We also will be responsible for co-teaching once a week for 50 minutes and for participating in extracurricular activities with students.” Brooke learned about Blue Engine through a member of her First-Year Interest Group (FIG). I ended up playing badminton with the factory director, in an old Soviet community room, where the workers used to have their meetings and put on performances. What is Francisco most anticipating about his post-graduation plans? “Going back to Ecuador to work on my footwear company,” he says. “I have been managing the business while studying my last two years, which has been a great challenge. However, with hard work and dedication, I have been able to keep the company running. I am excited to work full-time on my business so that hopefully one day it can be a recognized footwear brand.”

Campus Activity and Engagement: Iman has been accepted to the Peace Corps and is awaiting her assignment. She will join more than 230 Dickinson alumni who have served in the Peace Corps since the agency’s founding in 1961. Dickinson is a top Peace Corps volunteer-producing college. It has ranked in the top 10 among small colleges for the past three years.

Internship Experiences: Intern, Library of Congress; intern, Near East South Asia (NESA) Center for Strategic Studies at the U.S. Department of Defense: worked at the National Defense University assisting faculty and staff with research and planning for executive seminars on themes such as counterterrorism. The seminars were attended by diplomats from all across the Middle East, North Africa, Central and South Asia.
