Toulouse Programs
• The city of Toulouse is noted for its many pink brick buildings,
earning it the nickname “la ville rose."
• Toulouse is situated in the heart
of southwestern France, two hours from the Mediterranean Sea and two
and one-half hours from
the Atlantic Ocean. It is located on the Garonne River
just north of the Pyrenees Mountains, which separate France from Spain,
and is the
fourth-largest city in France. In a recent survey,
French citizens rated it the city in which they would most like to live
(excluding the capital),
based upon quality of life.
• The University of Toulouse is
an old and respected one, dating back to the 13th
century. Today, with 110,000 students and
four main campuses, it is the second largest university
in France.
While Dickinson’s Toulouse program is language intensive and
designed for students with some mastery of French, participants have
the chance to study a tremendous variety of subjects at the University
of Toulouse, including the social sciences, humanities (including music
and art) and the physical sciences.
It’s Not Just for French Majors!
Students may also study at the Institut Catholique (including
history, religion and philosophy), the Institut d’Etudes Politiques
(a highly regarded center for the study of political science) and
the Institut d’Administration des Entreprises (offering courses
in business management).
The program provides an important grounding in French language and
reflects Dickinson’s emphasis on a well-rounded, liberal arts
education. Field trips and cultural events enrich the program.
Students visit such sites as medieval cities ( Carcassonne ), the ruins of the Cathar castles (Montségur), Romanesque churches and monasteries (Conques), fortified villages (Cordes-sur-Ciel) and prehistoric caves (Niaux).
Toulouse offers a wide range of cultural activities such
as movies, theatre, concerts, opera, ballet and clubs.
Programs and Courses
Dickinson's Toulouse program participants may study overseas
for the full academic year or for the fall or spring
semester. Students take courses in French language, literature and
civilization at the
Dickinson Study Center. Classes are taught entirely
in French by faculty from the University of Toulouse and Dickinson
College. Students may
also take advantage of a language-intensive Summer
Immersion Program or a Studio Arts Summer Program in alternate summers.
Courses include:
French 255, 256: Literature and Society I & II
French 260: Writing Workshop
French 264: Intensive French Expression
French 273: Topics in Applied French
French 300: Toulouse Colloquium
French 320: Studies in Intercultural Communication
In addition, at the University of Toulouse, students may enroll in
a variety of courses up to the master’s level. Along with studying
political science, comparative literature, music and/or the performing
arts, participants may continue their work in English and American literature
or other foreign-language studies.
Academic Credit
Students earn standard Dickinson credits for courses
taken at the Dickinson Study Center and transfer credits for courses
successfully completed at the University of Toulouse and other institutions.
Internships are for one-half or one credit.
On-Site Administration
Prof. Sylvie Toux serves as the resident director of
the Toulouse Program and Center. Prof. Toux oversees the staff, plans
and leads the academic program, advises students and teaches.
Housing
To ensure that students experience local culture to the
fullest, students in all Toulouse programs are housed with French
families. The families, which are carefully matched with students
for compatibility, provide breakfast and three other meals per week
for academic year and semester participants. Students have the option
of having five meals with their host families, if they indicate this
preference upon their arrival in Toulouse.
Internships
For students with a good command of the French language, opportunities
are available in business
and marketing, public administration, journalism and
communications, education, the arts and applied sciences and medicine.
In the past,
students have worked at sites such as Cap Gemini/Ernst & Young,
Airbus, the Mairie de Péchabou, Spot Image, Théâtre Sorano, Sup'Aéro, the Fédération des Femmes pour l'Europe, and the U.S. Consulate.
