Message from the Vice President for Development

Alumni and parent volunteers provide an invaluable service each year to the college. My staff estimated that the college would need to double the size of our alumni-relations, development and admissions staffs to replace the volunteer time and talent given each year to the college.

The essence of the gifts provided by our volunteers is summed up nicely by a Princeton alum and friend of mine who introduced the three T's—time, talent and treasure—to me. Without the time, talent and treasure of our volunteers, our aspirations and enthusiasm for the college's future would lessen. We are inspired by their service and grateful for the support they provide.

Dickinson College is heavily dependent on volunteers to connect alumni, parents and friends philanthropically with the college. This annual report regularly celebrates the generosity of those who support the college; however, we have been less effusive and a bit remiss in applauding those individuals who so generously give not only their treasure but also their time and talent. Below is a list of volunteer groups that advance the college by working with the development team.

College Wide

• Trustees: The 37 alumni and parents who comprise the board of trustees exemplify the ideals of board service. Besides the many talents and the time they dedicated, this policy-making board and ultimate authority in running the college gave more than $6 million to Dickinson last year.
   
• Campaign Steering Committee: This committee is a subset of the board of trustees; it directs and guides the capital campaign. Members are responsible for gift policies, campaign priorities and goals. They actively participate in soliciting gifts from current and former trustees, and others as needed.

Development

• Class Chairs: The Class Chair program has served the college well for many years. We currently have 111 agents reaching out to classmates annually to ask for support of the annual fund.
   
• Reunion Volunteers: Each year the college celebrates 10 reunion years and a set of post-50th-reunion Golden Alumni. These individuals help raise the giving level for their class and plan the reunion events.
   
• Cabinet members: The college has five active cabinets—Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, New York City and Washington, D.C. These groups work with the development team to encourage a high level of philanthropy in their areas. This is done primarily through events and personal visits.
   
• Development committee of Alumni Council: This committee is a subset of the Alumni Council (the alumni governing board). Members advise the annual-fund staff about issues regarding marketing, recognition and strategy for building a more robust annual fund.
   
• Parents Fund Committee: This group serves the college as ambassadors and fund-raisers. Its primary mission is to ask parents to support the annual fund at the John Dickinson Society level.

The college is fortunate that so many have agreed to give the three T's over the years. Our upward trajectory as a college in admissions, endowment and fund raising coincides with a similar increase in the commitment and involvement of our alumni and parents. The collective measure of the time, talent and treasure offered by volunteers will determine our future. The college is greatly indebted to these groups of volunteers and appreciates what their involvement means to Dickinson's future.
