Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw is an associate professor of American art and affiliated faculty in Africana studies, cinema studies and women and gender studies at the University of Pennsylvania.

Shaw published an essay on these paintings for an exhibition at the Brandywine Art Museum last summer. The works themselves, featuring figures that are clothed and nude, male and female, are fascinating, as is her analysis of them. The New York Times devoted an article to her research.
