Dickinson on the Move - Highlights of the Month

In December, Harvard University's announcement of what it termed a "sweeping middle-income initiative" provoked a national discussion of college price and student financial-aid practices. Harvard's initiative, which included the replacement of loans with grants and a 10 percent cap on costs for families earning up to $180,000 a year, was followed by similar announcements by Yale and other elite schools.

Stepping boldly into this debate, President William G. Durden '71 and Vice President Robert J. Massa offered a different perspective on the policy changes, noting that most of the grants will go to upper-income students and actually could lead to increased tuition. Durden was featured in a front-page New York Times article about the pressure Harvard's decision has placed on smaller schools. Massa, interviewed by The Washington Post, criticized the new policy and compared it to merit aid as another factor contributing to increased prices.

Speaking of Harvard, Faith Nussbaum '06 is in Harvard’s master's program in higher education administration. She recently sent the following note:

“In my class about college admissions policies, we read a couple of New York Times articles that quoted Bob Massa on Dickinson’s enrollment management strategies … In another class, we read Shakespeare, Einstein, and the Bottom Line by David Kirp, which has a chapter devoted to Dickinson and the way that President Durden was able to turn it around.”
