Recycling

Recycling began in full force at Dickinson in 1991, when the program was expanded from a voluntary collection initiative by student groups to an institutionalized commitment.

There is still room for voluntary student involvement in Dickinson's recycling program. Concerned students can volunteer to become members of the Green Team. Green Team members agree to insure their halls are recycling properly and are adequately equipped with bins. Dave Durstewitz heads the Green Team, and would be happy to teach you about the program, if you're interested!

  • Keep in mind that "Recycle" is the last of the "3 R's." Before you put your container in the bin, try to find a creative way to re-use it. Click here for some helpful hints.

  • Remember that if a recycling container is contaminated with trash, the contents will not be able to be recycled.  Don’t contaminate the recycling bins!

RECYCLEMANIA

RecycleMania is a national contest pitting over 90 schools against each other in a fight to see which school can recycle the most materials per person on campus!  Prizes are also given for waste reduction and increases in composting. The contest is held each year, and is administered by the US EPA.  Dickinson is competing against schools across the country such as Harvard University, Princeton University, and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology.   The winner of the competition will have the right to boast of its accomplishments by placing an advertisement in all competing schools' campus newspapers!

The 2006-2007 school year will be the third year Dickinson has competed in RecycleMania.  During the 2005 contest Dickinson placed 24th out of 29 competing schools, but throughout the contest increased its recycling rate significantly as students lowered their trash output and recycled more. 2006 saw better results for the College, as we improved our rankings to 24th out of 45 schools.
