Ready for 2006 Campaign The Dickinson College volleyball team enters the 2006 training camp young but enthusiastic. Second year head coach Carli Dale returns just five players from the 2005 roster and will rely on a strong first-year class to supplement the veterans. The Devils lost All-Conference middle-blocker Margie Hatch and libero Ashley Lakin to graduation and have several players studying abroad for the academic year. The incoming class has a strong volleyball background that will complement the talent of the returning players. They will contribute significantly from the start and create a more competitive environment in the practice gym. Seniors Cara Scuduto (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) and Ashley Young (Hume, VA/Fauquier), and sophomore Amanda Lehn (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) will serve as captains for the 2006 season. Scaduto is a veteran outside hitter while Young has been a three-year starter in the middle. Lehn is a talented setter who missed her rookie campaign with a knee injury. The most competition for playing time might be at the setter position. Two-year starter Jen Voltz (Saxonburg, PA/Knoch) will return for her senior season in 2006. Jen has two years of experience under her belt as the starting setter. She ranks second all-time at Dickinson with 1,711 career assists. Voltz led the team in service aces and ranked second in blocks as well last season. "This is Jen’s senior season and she has shown that she means business this year. Jen is in great shape, has improved steadily over the past year, and really wants to make her senior year the best it can be, " states Dale. Lehn returns to the team this season after being side-lined in 2005 with a knee injury. Coach Dale expects Lehn to push Voltz for the starting setter position this season. “Amanda was unable to play last season and is more than ready to get back into the gym with the team. Amanda had a very successful high school career and is a tremendous competitor. I think that the competition between Amanda and Jen will be the most exciting competition in our gym,” says Dale. Both setters are also good all-around players and are capable of filling other roles when needed. Both are versatile players who can play wherever the team needs them to play. Dale believes this will provide more opportunities for the offense. By allowing both players to be on the floor, they are able to run a 5-1, 6-2, or a combination of both. While the battle for the setting position may be the most exciting, the competition for playing time at outside hitter is the deepest. Scaduto returns as the most experienced player on the outside. “Cara will be our most experienced player at outside hitter. We will look for her to be a solid all-around players for us, as well as show strong leadership as a senior,” commented Dale. A gang of first-year players will look to challenge the upperclassmen for time at outside hitter. First-years Kristen Lee (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood School), Chelsea Winkert (Cazenovia, NY/Cazanovia), and Elitsa Gosheva (Sofia, Bulgaria) are all expected to push the returning players in 2006. “We have a very experienced group of first-year players who will provide great depth for us on the antennaes, as well as some additional height," says Dale. Lee has tremendous experience playing for great high school and club programs in California. Like a typical Californian, she provides great ball control, both in passing and attacking. Winkert had great success as a setter and right side hitter for her high school team. Having such great setters in Votlz and Lehn will allow Winkert to focus on passing and hitting. She is a solid all-around player who will also provide good ball control for the team. Gosheva will be a great addition to the 2006 squad. she has some experience playing in the opposite position, which will be an important position to fill this season. Gosheva is also a great passer, giving coach Dale an additional person who will be able to step in and pass, if needed. The team has big shoes to fill with the graduation of All-Centennial player Margie Hatch. Young and first-year Allison Molchany (Columbia, MD/Chapelgate Christian Academy) will ably fill in for Hatch. Young was an All-Conference player her sophomore year and coach Dale looks forward to her rising to that level of play again this year. "Ashley came back this year in good shape and has shown that she wants to make the most of her senior year. We will look for Ashley to be a large part of our offense as well as be a great leader on the floor." Molchany is an experienced volleyball player who will be able to step-in immediately and make an impact on the court. She is a smart player and is expected to easily make the transition to the college game. Molchany also has experience playing in different positions, including the back row, which will allow the coaching staff to use her as a defensive, and a back row attacking option. Sophomore Meghan Erdman (Millersburg, PA/Millersburg) and first-year players Amanda Hayes (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) and Jamie Hennick (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) will contend for playing time at libero and defensive specialist during the 2006 season. Junior Christina Lakin (Bowie, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) will be sidelined for the season with a knee injury that has plagued her since her rookie year. “We are really going to miss Christina this season. Her personality is one that this team needs. We are fortunate that she will stay with the team in a supporting role. We will look forward to her returning to the team for her senior year,” complemented Dale. Erdman is a much improved player and is way ahead of where she was last year as a tough defender and server. Hayes is small, but very quick, which makes for a great defender. She adds some fire and excitement to the practice gym, which will hopefully translate into matches as well. The Red Devils open the 2006 season on Friday, September
1st at the Mount Union Invitational.
