Devils Deal Diplomats First Conference Loss
October 25, 2006

(Carlisle, PA) - Officially, sophomore goalkeeper Rodrigo Barboza (Caracas, Venezuela/Kent School, CT) recorded just three saves in Dickinson College's 1-0 win over Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Unofficially, Barboza made a number of remarkable plays, pulling corner after corner out of the air to stall the Diplomat attack.

The Red Devils handed 18th-ranked Franklin & Marshall its first Centennial Conference loss of the season and kept their own playoff hopes alive. The Diplomats fall to 6-1-1 in the CC and 12-2-2 overall. Dickinson improved to 10-6 and 4-4 in conference play.

The game was relatively even throughout with each team gaining momentum during different stages of the contest. At the end of the first half the Diplomats held a slim advantage in shots 4-3 but had forced five corners to just one for the Devils.

Barboza and the Dickinson defense maintained composure, clearing each attempt to keep the Diplomats off the board. After the break, the corners once again went in favor of F&M, 5-1, but the Devils were true to the task once again as well.

Offensively, Dickinson turned up the pressure, outshooting the Diplomats 6-2 over the final 45 minutes. The Devils had its best chance to take the lead in the 51st minute as senior Carlyle Balfour (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) was taken down in the box by senior goalkeeper Ed Stelz as Balfour slipped past the defense.

The penalty kick was off the mark, and the game remained scoreless. The Devils regrouped and soon were back on the offensive. Balfour broke free twice more, and on the second, ripped a shot that was deflected by Stelz and onto the foot of classmate Andy Rowek (West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall). Rowek saw nothing but net and blasted a shot into the back corner to put the Devils on the board.

The Devils had another great opportunity to add an insurance goal, but Stelz made two outstanding saves before Rowek sent a shot high of the crossbar. The Diplomats had a pair of quality chances around the 57th minute, sending a header over the bar and a shot that Barboza played perfectly.

The Devils settled back into a defensive posture but were still countering until the final minutes. A total team effort kept the Diplomats in check, securing the win for the Devils.

Dickinson hosts Gettysburg College on Saturday for the regular season finale at 1:00 pm.
