May 4, 2006
(Carlisle, PA) - Dickinson College senior
Ryan Stearrett (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) was voted
a co-winner of the 2005-06 McAndrews Award.
The McAndrews Award is the most prestigious
honor presented to a Dickinson College athlete. In addition to being an
outstanding student-athletes, the recipients possess strong leadership
qualities, demonstrate good sportsmanship and serve as positive role models
for future athletes.
This year, Dickinson honored three remarkable
student-athletes for their contributions during the 2005-06 academic year.
There were many qualified candidates for both the men and the women. 2006
graduate Annie Scogin (Groton, NY/Groton Central) was
presented the award for her commitment and dedication to the women’s
cross country and track.& field programs. The vote on the men’s
side led to co-winners. All-American lacrosse player Brian Read
’06 (Timonium, MD/Boys’ Latin) shared the honor with
Stearrett.
Stearrett proved to be a valuable asset to
the athletic program from the moment he arrived on campus. A two-sport
athlete, Stearrett excelled on both the football field and the baseball
diamond. He has been a four-year starter on the football team and is a
top candidate to start in the outfield again this spring. Having never
played the position before, Stearrett earned the starting spot in right
field as a rookie and has held the job ever since.
Stearrett was recently voted the top tight-end
in the Centennial Conference for the third straight season. He holds the
conference and school record for career receptions by a tight-end with
90. In addition to being named First-team All-Centennial last fall, Stearrett
was also selected to the Eastern College Athletic Conference First-team.
He led the Devils with 28 catches for 297 yards in 2005. As a blocker,
he helped the Devils finish first in the CC in total offense, second in
rushing and third in passing. The team also set school records for completions,
attempts and passing yards in a season. Those records were again broken
during the 2006 campaign.
On the diamond Stearrett has twice been
named to the All-Conference squad. Last season, he hit .381 on the year
with 35 RBIs and 31 runs scored. He set the school record for career doubles
with 38, matching his own single season record with 14 last spring. Stearrett
also eclipsed the single season hit record with 56 on year and committed
just three errors in 80 chances. Stearrett was named the team's Most Valuable
Player for 2006.
This fall, Stearrett capped an outstanding
career with a remarkable senior year. He was again named First-team All-CC
and First-team All-South Region by D3football.com. He was selected to
participate in the 2006 Aztec Bowl, featuring the top Division III players
from the United States and a collegiate All-Star team from Mexico. The
game is scheduled for December 16th in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Red Devils Tie 16th-Ranked Blue Jays
March 28, 2006
(Carlisle, PA)- The Dickinson College baseball
team played 11 innings with the 16th-ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins
University before the game was called for darkness as a 3-3 tie. The Centennial
Conference match-up has proven to be an exciting one in recent years,
and this afternoon was no different.
The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the top
of the ninth inning, but starting pitcher Brian Kelley (Cedar
Knolls, NJ/Whippany Park) made a great play at third, and later
retired the side without surrendering a run. The Devils managed to fill
the bases in bottom half of the inning, but failed to produce the game-winner
as well, forcing extra-innings.
Dickinson took an early lead, scoring two
runs on the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Ryan Miklusak
(Ellicott City, MD/Salisbury) walked and scored on an RBI single
by Ryan Stearett (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth). Sophomore
DH Nick Perkins (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) singled and
scored on a wild pitch to put the Devils in front 2-0.
In the second, Rob Gilcrest (Maplewood,
NJ/Columbia) singled and scored off an RBI single by Miklusak
to stretch the margin to 3-0. The Blue Jays pushed one across in the fourth
inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Ron Pietroforte tripled to lead-off the
inning, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Corey Gleason.
Junior catcher Ron Sanzillo reached on an
error in the sixth, stole second and later scored on a single from Pietroforte.

A lead-off walk for Gilcrest and back-to-back
singles from catcher Fran Grunde (Upper Darby, PA/Episcopal Academy)
and Matt Catania (Newtown Square, PA/Cardinal O'Hara)
loaded the bases for Dickinson in the ninth. Hopkins' relief
pitcher Brian Deleo sighed a breath of relief as the umpire went his way
on a full count, with a called third strike on a close pitch for the second
out. Perkins then hit a shot to the right side but Gleason was there to
tag Catania for the final out of the inning.
Jamie King (Milford, DE/St. Andrew's)
came in for two solid innings of relief
for the Devils, allowing no hits and just one walk. Kelley recorded five
strikeouts and two earned runs in nine strong innings, surrendering just

Devils Flash Leather, Speed in Fall Ball Play-Day
October 1, 2005
The Dickinson College baseball team played
aggressive and relatively mistake free baseball Saturday in a fall ball
tripleheader with visiting Messiah College. The three games marked culmination
of the summit of the fall ball season, and saw every fall ball participant
log innings. The Devils played consistent defense, only committing one
error on the day, and showed aggressiveness on the bases, stealing eight
bases and stretching multiple singles into doubles.
Game One was a barn-burner, finishing after
nine innings in a 16-16 tie. The Devils struck early and often, jumping
out to a 6-0 lead after three innings. Sophomore Craig Costa,
the first of five Devils pitchers, threw 2 scoreless innings to start
the game. Offensively, Dickinson was lead by 1-2 hitters First-year third
baseman Rob Kutner (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R, SB) and
shortstop Matt Catania (4-6, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R)
who sparked a 19 hit explosion for the home team. Other standouts were
sophomore outfielders Ben Werthan (2-3, RBI, 3 R),
Logan MacPhail (3-5, 2B, 3 RBI, R) and Nick Peper (3/6,
3 R, RBI, 2 SB). First-year catcher Owen McClellan
and sophomore outfielder Dave Donahoo also chipped in,
each with two runs scored.
Game Two featured less offensive fireworks
for the home team, and resulted in a disappointing 10-4 loss. However,
there were still bright spots for the Red Devils. Kutner and Catania continued
to impress, accounting for three hits between them. Sophomore P/OF Matt
Villone had a good day at the plate (2-4, 2B, R) as well, and
sophomore P/OF Mike Lapicki chipped in with a RBI single.
On the mound, First-year right hander Zach Pollack made
an impressive college debut, throwing two scoreless innings and recording
a strikeout.
Game Three, featuring veteran players for
both teams, saw the edge go to the pitchers. sophomores Villone, Brian
Kelley, and junior Matt Eonta held Messiah to
just two runs, the result of a misplayed fly ball to right field. Kelley
was particularly impressive, recording a strikeout in two flawless innings.
Eonta also had a strikeout in one inning of work (the game was shortened
by darkness). Offensively, First-year indfielder Matt Bock
was 2-3 while sophomore infielders Steve Meyers (1-1, R)
and Dustin Cohen (2-2, 2B, RBI) also hit well. The game
ended on a bases loaded walk issued to sophomore clean-up hitter Nick
Perkins, giving the Red Devils a 3-2 victory.
Dickinson continues its fall season this
week, with a full slate of inter-squad games in the highly competitive
Red-White-Grey World Series. The spring season opens March 1st at home
