Málaga, Spain

Dickinson offers three programs in Málaga:  1) a full academic year; 2) a Fall semester only program, or 3) a language-intensive Summer Immersion Program.

Dickinson College offered its first full-year study abroad program in Spain in 1985, in cooperation with the Universidad de Málaga. Since that time, Dickinson has expanded its program in Málaga and now runs a comprehensive program that focuses on Spanish language and literature, culture and society and also includes courses in history and international studies and internships. Dickinson’s Málaga programs are open to students who have completed several semesters of Spanish-language course work and are motivated for intensive study in Spain. Participants take courses in Spanish literature, art, history, economics, and culture. These classes, taught by locals as well as by the Dickinson resident director, are located at the Cursos para Extranjeros of the Universidad de Málaga and are specially designed to mesh with the Dickinson College curriculum—taking students beyond the Spanish-related course work offered on the Carlisle campus. In the fall, students take five courses, three of which are required courses.  In the spring, students take four courses.  (Internships are available only in the spring semester to full academic-year students).

Academic Credit:  Most students who successfully complete the academic year in Málaga earn nine credits:  five in the fall and four in the spring.
Application Deadline:  Semester or full year, Feb. 15
Special requirements:  2.8 GPA and Spanish 231 at Dickinson College

Summer Immersion Program in Málaga

The five-week Málaga Summer Immersion program allows students to expand their linguistic ability and develop cultural awareness of the Hispanic world. While living in Málaga, students will also acquire an understanding of the history and culture of a Hispanic civilization.  Program participants are required to abide by a language policy to speak only in Spanish for the duration of the program.

Academic Credit: The Summer Immersion program is designated as Spanish 200. Students who successfully complete the program will earn one course credit (the equivalent of four semester hours). Students will receive a letter grade for the course.
Application Deadline:  Feb. 1
Requirements: 2.8 GPA and Spanish 116

Querétaro, México

Dickinson offers a spring semester program only.  Students may take any classes at the UAQ for which they are qualified.  For example, in past years, participants have studied anthropology, economics, sociology, fine arts, literature, business and education.  All courses are taught in Spanish.  For a course to count towards a major, prior approval is required from the registrar and the major department.

Academic Credit:  Students will receive credit for Latin American Studies 202 and one credit for each course successfully completed at the UAQ, up to a maximum of four course credits.
Application Deadline:  Oct. 1

Requirements:  2.8 GPA and at least three semesters of college-level Spanish.  For detailed information see Global Education

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Dickinson offers a Fall semester program only.  This gives students the possibility to spend a full year in Latin America when combined with our program in Querétaro, which runs during the Spring. The program works in partnership with IES Buenos Aires, which is the oldest program of study abroad in Argentina.  IES operates from three universities: Universidad de Buenos Aires, Academia Dante Alighieri, and Universidad Torcuato Ditella, offering students a variety of courses in the following areas: Argentine and Latin American literature, Spanish and world literatures, art, architecture and design, theatre, dance, film, humanities, social sciences, and international business.  In addition it provides students with internships for credit in arts, business, education, government, human rights, and public health.

Application Deadline: Feb. 15

Requirements: 2.8 GPA

São Paulo, Brazil

The CIEE program in Brazil is intended for students with at least two years of college-level Spanish or one year of Portuguese (or the equivalent).  The program is affiliated with the Catholic University of São Paulo, and students have access to a full range of courses in Latin American studies, social sciences, and culture and literature.  All classes are taught in Portuguese.  Students have the opportunity to enroll in the program for the fall, spring, or full academic year. Students interested in Latin American studies may wish to combine a fall semester in São Paulo with a spring semester in Querétaro, or a fall semester in Buenos Aires with a spring semester in São Paulo.  For more information please consult Global Education.
