Energy Issues

Energy conservation and the purchase of clean energy have been at the forefront of the College's collective consciousness for some time. Dickinson SAVES members have secured donations of wind turbines, increased our clean energy purchase, and orchestrated contests devoted to energy conservation.

1996

Student group EarthNow! submitted recommendations to the Commission on the Environment including:
* Lowering temperature in dorms
* Increasing use of compact fluorescent light bulbs
* Increasing amount of RA education and outreach

Dickinson joined the EPA's Greenlights program

Trial run of motion sensor lights in Bosler, no unfavorable responses.

2002

Wind contract unveiled, Dickinson decides to purchase 9.2% of our energy from PA wind farms through Community Energy, Inc.

2004

Got a small-scale (400 watt) wind turbine donated to Dickinson

2005

Dickinson holds first ever Green Devil Challenge in the spring semester, a competition designed to decrease water usage through challenging academic and administrative buildings to reduce water and energy usage by 15%. Prize is $10 declining balance. Schuman and Strayer house are declared the residential winners, and the Clarke Center and Admissions are the administrative champions.


2006

Becki Walker & Ken Shultes co-write a matching grant from the PA DEP's Energy Harvest Fund for $250,000. This grant will be used to construct a solar panel array that will provide all of the energy needed by the Facilities building.

Green Devil Challenge is continued, prize changes to $10 declining balance or $12 to Appalachian Whole Foods or Pomfret Street Used Books.

2007

College Farm managers Jenn Halpin and Matt Steiman receive an Energy Farmers Grant to install solar panels at the College Farm.

President Durden joins the Presidents Climate Commitment, committing the College to climate neutrality.
