Education and Outreach

Education has always been considered essential to creating a fostering a strong environmental ethic. Here are some of the projects Dickinson SAVES have been engaged in over the past fifteen years.

1994

“News you can use” educational Dickinsonian columns published.

1996

Student group EarthNow makes the following recommendations to improve outreach:
* Including Environmental Sustainability as an annual topic at the Clarke Center
* Creating a “How can Dickinson be more sustainable?” essay contest in conjunction with the Clarke Center
* Holding an environmental congress

1994

Idea of creating a website discussed

Student Senate forms Ad-Hoc Committee for Environmental Sustainability


2001

Discussed displaying a day's worth of trash to create awareness

2002

Created an environmental education program at Crestview Elementary
Displaying a day's worth of trash discussed again
Created a trash display with new garbage truck

2003

Alumni For a Sustainable Dickinson (AFSD), a group of concerned alumni encouraging a sustainable future for Dickinson College, was formed. They have no official affiliation with the College.

2004

Created a Green Book for recruitment
Held mandatory first year and RA green orientation programs

2005

Dickinson hosted a Sustainability Week – A Global Look at Environmental Sustainability: Red, White, and Green . Events included a night of local foods in the cafeteria, a photo/art exhibit in the Weiss Center, a student panel discussion on Perspectives of Americans from Abroad, a talk on “Balancing Global Sustainability: Economic, Social, and Environmental Considerations” featuring distinguished alum George Honadle, an international career luncheon, and a discussion about environmental issues on Bill Durden's radio show.

2006


Updated “The Little Green Book” for incoming students, as well as brochure for admissions.

Overhauled and revamped Sustainability and Dickinson SAVES website.

Advertised Green Devil Challenge through kick-off event featuring student bands and speaker Lora Winslow of The Naked Truth Project, concluding with a screening of “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Attended conferences on clean energy and recycling.

The Spring 2006 issue of Dickinson Magazine was focused on environmental issues on campus and the good green work being done by students and alumni.

Increased awareness through a “Caught Green Handed” competition, where students who are seen doing something positive for the environment are rewarded with a token for a cookie.

Held a Sustainability Sculpture Contest for artistically-inclined students to showcase their ability to create art with reused materials.

Included more members of campus in the sustainability effort through the creation of the “Sustainability Sheriff” program for staff and administrators.

2007

Two "Sustainability Summits" are held for all members of the campus community dedicated to sustainability. The first focuses on informing staff, students, and faculty about the sustainability programming on campus, the second on creating a campus-wide assessment tool.

Dickinson participates in Step it Up 2007!

We host a sustainability tour for other colleges.

The second-ever Sustainability Week is held -- events include participation in World Water Day, a panel discussion featuring alumnit talking about global climate change, Trash on the Plaza, and a Treehouse reunion.

As part of RecycleMania, Sustainability Dept. interns raid the trash in different dorms, offering free grab & go bags to dorms with less than five recyclables per trash bin.
