Collaboration with Dining Services
Dining Services has been one of our biggest partners in increasing campus sustainability. Without their help, Dickinson would be far less environmentally friendly!
1996
Student Group EarthNow! submitted recommendations to the Commission on the Environment including:
* Reducing napkin usage and serving portions
* Increasing vegetarian options
* Composting food waste
* Reducing the amount of disposable containers used at the SNAR
2005
Dining Services begins composting food waste at breakfast, expands program to lunch and dinner as well
Student group EarthNow! makes homemade reusable bags for use at Grab and Go.
Cafeteria begins to purchase some local and organic food
Thanks to campaign by students for social action, all coffee is certified fair-trade and organic
Underground eating establishment converted to organic snack bar
2006
Facilities and Dining Services work together to purchase Grab and Go bags featuring the Green Devil logo
Dining Services purchases “cold cups” made of corn byproducts for use at the SNAR and Quarry, as well as biodegradable to-go containers for both locations.
Facilities and the College Garden team up to renovate a College-owned farm near Boiling Springs. This farm, which will be operated by Jenn Halpin and Matt Steiman, will eventually produce about $50,000 worth of food for the cafeteria.
