Internship Expectations
Professor Hoefler
updated August 2004

Weekly journal submitted via email:  You should submit a synopsis (approximately one single-spaced page per week, minimum) where your specify the  internship hours you work, the activities you undertake, and your reactions to the experiences of the week.  You may submit shorter journal entries on weeks that you have limited or no internship activity (e.g., because of sickness on your part, because your internship site was closed for the holiday, or for other legitimate specified reasons).  NOTE:  When it comes to sending me your journal entries, I much prefer text email to attachments.

Academic component:  At some point in each week's journal, you should comment on the progress you have made on the academic component of the internship. Early in the semester, your comments may be related to topic selection only, but comments should be more detailed and substantive once the topic has been identified.

Portfolio:  All academic work for the internship should be put together in an "Internship Portfolio" and submitted at the end of the semester.  This material should be compiled in a 3-ring binder and should include the following items (include tabbed and labeled dividers for each major section of the portfolio):

. . . . . • Cover sheet (include your name, date, time-frame of the internship, internship site name, site supervisor, along with the supervisor's title, address, and contact information)

. . . . . • Table of Contents

. . . . . • Current copy of your resume (work the Career Center to get this up to speed and presentable).

. . . . . • Cover letter (limit to 1 page), describing the mission of the organization in which you interned, and the role you played, therein.  Also explain the key  lessons learned.  For general style of the letter, see:

www.dickinson.edu/departments/polcy/styles.html#letter

. . . . . •  Copies of  "Thank you" letters sent to your site supervisor(s) and (as appropriate) any others who may have played an important role in your internship experience.

. . . .. . • Final, clean, proof-read copy of the final academic component.  Include a list of references.

 . . . . . • Appendix 1:  Supporting materials for your academic component.

. . . . . • Appendix 2:  Hard copy of email journal entries, organized in chronological order.

. . . . . •  Appendix 3:  Copies of any work products you had a hand in developing.  Include a cover sheet for this section explaining any role you may have played in the development of these work products.

Due Date:  Internship portfolios are due on the LAST DAY OF CLASS.  Late portfolios will be graded down accordingly.

Exit Interview:  You should set up a final meeting with me to review your internship when you turn in the portfolio.
