ALUMNI vs VARSITY SOCCER MATCH
Varsity Field, August 25th, 2001, kick-off 2:30 p.m.
Something new - Be there!
"Nort" is at it again. He has not been this busy since he got back to campus that evening in September 1980 after he scored the winning goal against Shippensburg and set out to tell everyone at Dickinson and in all surrounding communities!
Again, with the enthusiastic support of Coach Brown, a proper varsity match has been arranged at a good time of the season for both varsity and alums. This is also a good time of the year for the Alumni Office who are usually swamped at Homecoming. They are working hard to make this month's match a success. There will be dinner at the Dickinson Park facilities after the match and a good time will be had by all until the Advil wears off.
So far Mike has confirmed 16 players who are definitely going to defy time and gravity on the 25th and at least six more probables. Scott Walsh '92 has dubbed this "Survivor III: Punishment in Carlisle." (Any comments about "Weakest Link" - the most competed for award at any Alumni Match?)
Make sure that you are replying
to Nort's e-mails (northridge.michael@epa.gov) and let's get the Red Shirt
on!

After another long absence here
is more news. I hope that I can get time enough to keep it going.
Anyway here is a communication from Mike Northridge, who with Scott Walsh,
and the enthusiastic co-operation of Coach Brown, worked miracles to revive
an alumni match this homecoming.
Too bad y'all couldn't make it to the Homecoming
scrimmage against the varsity.
It was a lot of fun. We only had six
alumni (me, Bob Wormald '82, David Liu
'78, Scott Creekpaum '79, Matt Kraft '92,
Scott Walsh '92), even though a number
of other alumni had RSVP-ed that they were
coming. We added five faculty
members (Russian language professor Robert
Bird, geology prof John Henson, track
coach John Hartpence, women's assistant soccer
coach Sarah Bowles '00, men's assistant
soccer coach Dino -I don't know his real name)
to get a full eleven on our
side. Plus Coach Mark Brown gave us
a few undergrads to help fill out our
"roster." (Truth be told, the young
guys were key, particularly the freshman
goalie, Kyle.) We also had plenty
of coaching on the sidelines: not only was
Osborne there, but also former coach Enrique
Martinez-Vidal. (Carlisle
natives/alumni players Paul Riggs '85 and
Al Masland (who also served, I think,
as the women's coach years ago) were also
there, although each declined to go to
their respective homes, only a few blocks
away, and retrieve their spikes and
join the action.)
We did all right ---- as our "instant
offense", Worm contributed a nice assist
(to Dino) within a minute of entering the
match. Scott Walsh, who helped
organize the game w/me, added another goal
later, so I think the final tally was
3-2, 'though no one was keeping score, really.
Everyone agreed that it was a
good first step in "reviving" the tradition
of an alumni game, and we're looking
forward to organizing next year's match.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils picked up
their third straight win the next day, showing
that they're coming together
after a rough 0-9 start. (Actually,
it was their fourth straight win if, as in
Coach Nickey's era, they had 'counted' the
alumni game!)
"Wait 'til next year!"

P.S. Our sports information director has put together a fine comprehensive media guide this year, filled with all the college records, naming all lettermen ever, as well as information on the present. I have a few extra copies, let me know if you would like one.

A communication from the son and grandchildren
of a 1938-1940 team member, Michael A. DeMatteis '42, now sadly deceased,
requests a photograph from the time and some information on that era of
Dickinson Soccer. I have posted a team photograph in the Alumni Gallery
and more information will follow as we gather it. Thanks for the
request, Michael.
If there are other alumni of the time out
there who would want to tell the DeMatteis family something about the life
and times of Dickinson Soccer in 1939 or 1940, please get in touch and
I will forward an e-mail address.
Matt is preparing for medical school and lives in Philadelphia. Bill is a project manager for MBNA America in Wilmington, Delaware and the coach of the fine Kirkwood Soccer Club's under 13s.
If you want to drop Bill a line, his address is 3405 Pebble Beach Drive, Wilmington, DE 19808 and his phone number is 302-325-1975
To continue to get this page under way, for those who do not know, Javier Palazuelos '95, is in his second year as a Dickinson College Admissions Officer, and still is the College's leading goalscorer. His college extension is 717-245-1231 and he lives at 103 N. East Street inCarlisle.
Message for alumni : I am not sure how or when we will be able to arrange an alumni match in 1997 but we should build on the good work of Scott Walsh last year to reconstruct this as an event for all alumni. Take a look at the schedule and let me know if you have any ideas. Homecoming is very late this year, on November one, but we are at home, playing Johns Hopkins on Saturday. --Osborne
