Shirley Sprunger King received her musical training at Bluffton College (Ohio), the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Kansas, where she earned the degree Doctor of Musical Arts in organ performance. King’s primary organ teachers include Peter Hurford, Roberta Gary, and James Higdon.
King is Director of Academic Advising and Adjunct Faculty for organ and harpsichord instruction at Dickinson College. She also coordinates and is the principal performer for the Jardine Music Series, concerts that feature the historic organ built by George Jardine and Son in 1869 located at The Brethren Home Community (New Oxford, PA).
Prior to moving to south-central Pennsylvania in 2003, King taught at Bethel College (Kansas), where she chaired the Music Department. Active in the Midwest as a recitalist, presenter for church music workshops, and organ consultant, she was organist-harpsichordist for the Wichita Symphony Orchestra for 26 years.
During the fall of 1987 King was awarded a Fulbright Lectureship to teach organ and perform in Argentina. While in Argentina she researched the organ works of Alberto Ginastera and other unpublished manuscripts of Argentine organ music. King served for three years on the national screening committee for Fulbright awards for organ and harpsichord post-graduate study.
King has produced two recordings: Organ and Instruments with the Bethel College faculty Deknatel Consort (Hymnal Masterworks Series for Faith and Life Press, 1996); and Singing at the Fire: Voices of Anabaptist Martyrs (Faith and Life Press, 1998) with Kenneth Nafziger and the Chamber Singers of Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
An active member of the American Guild of Organists, King is associated with the Harrisburg Chapter. She has served as National Secretary for the 23,000-member organization and is currently National Director for the Committee on Membership Development and Chapter Support. |
