The Department determines the number of your Performance Studies course based upon the number of semesters of lessons you’ve taken at Dickinson. (These numbers have no relation to your overall musical experience or expertise.) To the three-digit course number is then appended a section number that identifies the instrument you’re studying.

The 100 Level

• Your first semester of study in any instrument is registered as Music 113. (Beginning students of piano, voice, and guitar should substitute 111-01, 111-02, or 111-03—piano, voice, and guitar classes—respectively.)
• Your second semester of study is registered as Music 114. Beginning at the 114 level, students are required to present a final jury at the end of the semester.

The 200 Level

• By your third semester of study (Music 213), your instructor will begin to introduce various styles and style periods (different languages, in the case of voice), and you will have begun to work toward memorized performance.
• The fourth semester of study is registered as Music 214. Expectations of students in terms of practice time, difficulty of music, and memorization continue to increase.

The 300 Level

• Performance Majors, in their fifth and sixth semesters, register for Music 323 and 324, in preparation for a junior recital to be presented at the end of the sixth semester.
• Other students register for Music 313 and 314, and continue to develop skills, techniques, and repertory under the guidance of their instructor. Public performance is encouraged.

The 400 Level

• Performance Majors, in their fifth and sixth semesters, register for Music 423 and 424, in preparation for a full recital to be presented at the end of the sixth semester. The student also prepares a research paper on one aspect of the recital program.
• Other students register for Music 413 and 414, and continue to develop skills, techniques, and repertory under the guidance of their instructor. Public performance is urged at the 400 level.
