Since graduation, I have gotten my Master's in Special Education from Long Island University. With this degree, I have been teaching children with Autism at Ascent: A School for Individuals with Autism for the past 2 1/2 years on Long Island. I am currently looking to pursue my Ph.D. in Behavioral Disorders at either NYU, Columbia, or Queens College. Although I am not doing anything pertaining to my history major, I still enjoyed every second of every class I was enrolled in within the history department at Dickinson.

This fall I began a Master's program in Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park part-time. My goal is to focus on social policy with a more specialized look at education and public health issues. For the next year or so I'll basically be studying the "core" elements of Maryland's program, which include statistical analysis type classes, ethics and political consideration type classes, along with some other public leadership courses. Interestingly, I think I may be the first Dickinson grad to study policy with UMD.

My experience as a history major at Dickinson has been the foundation for my career. I am currently a HS history teacher working at Cresskill Jr/Sr HS in Cresskill, NJ. At Cresskill I teach two sections of college prep US history (11th grade), one section of US honors (11th grade), and two sections of world history (9th grade). As I am sure you can tell, choosing history as a major while at Dickinson has proved to be a wise decision.

Since graduation in May I have used my history degree from Dickinson College to put me on the path of attaining a teaching degree in Social Studies. I am enrolled in a program in the state of New Jersey called "Alternate Route," which consists of taking certification courses at Rider University and The College of New Jersey, while teaching simultaneously. The program is perfect for someone like me, who did not realize until late in my college career that I wanted to teach. Also after I complete the certification courses I will have the opportunity to continue with my masters courses. I also coach football at Steinert High School in New Jersey.

As most of you know, I am just recently graduated (class of 2002), so I probably do not have much to offer just yet! I am currently in graduate school at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado pursuing my masters degree in history. I am concentrating in the field of public history, and hopefully that will lead to a job in a museum or archives somewhere. I hope everyone in the history department is doing well!
2004 Update: Since my last email I have graduated from Colorado State University with my Master's degree in American History and Museum Studies. While in Colorado I
had several internships in the public history field and worked for one year as the director of a small local history museum. I was responsible for designing exhibits, planning educational programs, fundraising, creating a local history archive, and many other things! In August of 2004 I moved to South Bend, Indiana and began work as the records manager in the University Archives at the University of Notre Dame. I am currently in the process of creating a records retention program for the University--a huge job to say the least! I have loved using the knowledge and skills that I learned as a history student at Dickinson to educate the public about their past, present, and future.

I completed my master's degree in history at East Stroudsburg University in August, 2003. While there, I realized the depth and scope of the degree I earned at Dickinson. For my thesis, I was able to intertwine my history skills with my interest in higher education to produce a study on Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's presidency at Bowdoin College.
After leaving East Stroudsburg, I moved to Washington, D.C. and began my Ed.D. studies in higher education administration at The George Washington University. I currently am employed at Georgetown University Law Center, where I was recently promoted to a grades analyst position.
It is difficult to count the ways my history degree has helped in preparing me not only to continue my graudate studies, but to think critically and objectively about nearly everything. My history degree at Dickinson has been the absolute perfect foundation to succeed professionally and academically.
Update: Since my last information was posted, I am now currently working as a Grades Analyst at Georgetown Law Center and am an Ed.D student at the George Washington University. I delivered a paper "The New Education: The Bowdoin College Presidency of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain" at the Phi Alpha Theta national history conference in New Orleans, LA, January 2004. Additionally, I will be presenting a paper at the New England Historical Society's annual meeting in Brookline, MA, on April 17, 2004.

I have started an exciting new position with Delta Sigma Phi headquarters in Indianapolis, IN. I was appointed Regional Director of the Northeast and Pacific Northwest chapters. I will provide resource assistance from Indianapolis throughout the summer. In the fall and spring I will be traveling to the chapters to implement national policy and risk management curriculum. My experience as a history major has been invaluable as I research the chapter's and college's I will visit.
Update: I have recently accepted a position as an Underwriting Account Executive for
WTMD, 89.7 FM in Towson, MD. My history degree has proven to be quite handy as
I research potential clients, prepare contracts, and create media kits for our underwriters.

I got a job in August with the school district of Lancaster teaching 8th grade social studies. It is a permanent job as well. . . . I am so happy with it. I love it everyday. I love the kids and I love the material as well.
