Selected comments from 2006 Participants
“I have taught for 34 years and have been to over 100 workshops in history and this is definitely on my top 5 list. It was well planned, contained excellent information for my American History classes and was both scholarly and interesting.” “This was by far the most organized and effective workshop I have been to. From the moment I checked in on campus until I left I was immersed in so much information and the access to excellent people that were extremely knowledgeable about the Underground Railroad and research methods. I will be using numerous materials from this workshop and have already reformulated the way I intend to teach about these topics.” “The workshop was excellent! Extremely well organized and scholarly. I learned a great deal about the antebellum fight against slavery in Pennsylvania and the North in general. Increased knowledge concerning these topics will be very useful in my teaching.” “The Dickinson College campus was an outstanding facility. The dorms were in close proximity to everything: classrooms, library, cafeteria and shops. The dorms were comfortable, well-situated and the air conditioned. The library had tremendous resources available.” “As a result of my participation in this workshop, I have gained not only a wealth of information on the Underground Railroad but also expert perspectives I would probably never have considered. The interaction between the director and participants has definitely broadened and strengthened my professionalism.” “Dickinson College is beautiful! Dorm rooms excellent, food good, and someone came over immediately when I had a computer problem.” “The director, Matt Pinsker, was excellent. It was all very well organized and planned. Having the two authors of the books we read was really great for us. My colleagues were very interested in learning and added much to the week. The onsite visits to Christiana and Harper's Ferry were excellent.” “This was my third NEH workshop, and it was by far the best organized and planned of them all. The speakers were exceptionally qualified, the activities were interesting and relevant, and the discussions were stimulating and thought-provoking.” “Dickinson College is a beautiful site to hold a workshop. It is small enough to be able to get from building to building easily. The dorm rooms were adequate and, very importantly, the beds were comfortable! The Library and facilities were unbelievable. Coming from a district where they have removed the computer lab and teacher from our elementary students, I was overwhelmed by the availability of technological research. John Osborn needs recognition for the extremely useful website that will keep the workshop alive long after this summer is over! I thoroughly enjoyed the research capabilities!” “Professor Pinsker was truly a great teacher. He was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. It was evident that he was in charge, yet he was always interesting in the participants ideas and questions. The authors that spoke were fantastic. I deeply appreciated the time and effort Professor Pinsker put into supplying us with outstanding speakers.” “I was so awed by this whole week. Traveling to Christiana and Harpers Ferry and participating in class provided me with new insights on the underground railroad; ones that are needed to teach children information not found in textbooks.” “The workshop was well organized, the field days were packed with historical stops and information so that we experienced some of what happened at two big incidents. Discussions were on going during our classroom time, on the bus, in the vans, and over meals. The topics were focused and complimentary to our study.” “The institute was thought-provoking, interesting and inspiring. Throughout, the experience was well organized and planned, leaving time for individual work, group discussion, and expert presentations. Truly, this workshop opened my eyes to a topic about which I thought I knew so much, and in the end, I realized that I knew so very little. My understanding of the Underground Railroad and the beginnings of the Civil War were literally transformed by this experience, and I am excited about the opportunity to bring that information into the classroom.” “Dickinson College provided an excellent venue for this workshop. Communication was excellent and our contact person, Elaine was superb. Things worked exactly as planned.” |
