About the Flu

Symptoms come on suddenly and include:
Sudden severe fever (>101) and chills
Headache
Dry cough, may be severe and painful
Muscle aches
Sore throat

Prevention:
Wash hands, wash hands, wash hands!!!!!!
Get extra sleep to boost your immune system
Avoid individuals who may be infected
The flu is a virus, antibiotics DO NOT KILL VIRUSES

Treatment:
Antiviral medication may help only if started within the first 48 hours
(see below for more information about antiviral medication)
Tylenol to control fever (do not take aspirin if you are under the age of 20)
Drink extra fluids
Get extra sleep
Do not go to classes if you have a fever, you will be contagious

New medication can now stop the virus from replicating, which in turn shortens the number of days you are ill, and decreases the severity of the illness.  It must be started within 48 hour of the onset of symptoms and is  available through the Health Center.  If you call for an appointment and you think you have the flu, please let the receptionist know how long you have had your symptoms, so we can start treatment as soon as possible.

If you are under 20 years of age, DO NOT take aspirin products.
Use Tylenol or a non aspirin product.
