Program description and objectives:

Dickinson’s German language summer immersion program in Bremen has a long history. Since 1984, the German Department has been organizing the summer language immersion program in Bremen, Germany, to afford Dickinson students the opportunity to increase their competency in the German language and their awareness of German culture. The program is designed for students who have satisfactorily completed the intermediate (116) level of German who would like to study in Germany, yet usually are unable to participate in a semester or year-long program in the University of Bremen because of major requirements. The language immersion is complete: students live with German families, have language instruction at the University of Bremen, and pledge to speak German within the group. Specialized lectures in German give the students insight into specific social issues, politics, the arts or the environment. Organized excursions within Bremen and its surroundings complement the knowledge acquired within the classroom and introduce students first-hand to German and European culture and history. The students spend approximately 48 hours in classroom instruction, and 60-70 contact hours with the program director on cultural field trips. The summer language immersion program often motivates students to continue their German language study beyond the required level. Participants often pursue a German minor; some go on to pursue a German major and return to the University of Bremen for a semester or year of study.
