In May 2006, professors Jeff Niemitz and Beth O'Shea took twelve students to explore the geology of the U.K. Here at Siccar's Point Scotland, “The Holy Grail of Geology,” is where James Hutton, “The father of geology,” in 1788 deduced that the earth was a dynamic system in which rocks could be deformed over long periods of time. Bellow the students, Devonian red sandstones (top left) overlie vertical Silurian argillaceus sandstones (bottom right) in an angular unconformity. A page devoted to the U.K. trip can be found here.
