For my ETW Fellowship I interned at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), which is part of the National Defense University (NDU) in Washington D.C. The mission of NDU is to “prepare military and civilian leaders from the United States and other countries to evaluate national and international security challenges through multi-disciplinary educational and research programs, professional exchanges, and outreach.” Within that framework ICAF serves to conduct research on and educate its students about the resource strategy component of national security. I worked with the Department of Military and Strategy Logistics and Agribusiness Industry Study.
During my internship I conducted a comparative study on water governance as it relates to agriculture and food security in China, the United States, and Europe (the three agricultural centers of the world). In addition to my research and other intern duties I was able to attend events at NDU and even participate in a gaming exercise in which I acted as a senior policy leading responding to occurrence of an avian flu pandemic, caused by human to human transmission of the mutated virus.
