Annie Donovan '07 and Christine Kidd '07 used their ETW funds to travel to the United Arab Emirates in a trip linked to a class they were taking, the Modern History of the Gulf. The trip lasted two weeks during Dickinson´s January term and included one week in Abu Dhabi and one in Dubai.
During the two weeks, they spent time at Zayed University, a women´s university with branches in both cities. They had the opportunity to interact with a lot of the students there in seminars and out of the classroom, including a dinner cruise and tours of the cities. Some other highlights included snowboarding in the desert, visiting mountain villages, touring a falcon hospital and attending a reception with the minister of education from the royal family of the UAE. The trip was followed by a semesterlong class examining the history of the Gulf region as a whole in which they drew on their experiences from the UAE to illustrate the topics they were covering in class.
Annie returned to Dubai in March for a conference sponsored by Zayed University. The topic of the conference was Woman as Global Leaders and focused on the changing role of women in Arab countries and around the world.
