Engage the World fellows in India |
||
| In the summer of 2005, five Engage the World Fellows, along with nine other Dickinsonians, traveled to India to participate in the Habitat for Humanity Global Village program. We spent two weeks in Khammam, a city in southern India. From morning until early afternoon, we helped at various work sites throughout a village. Work included transporting of building materials, laying bricks and mixing cement. The children who lived in the village were very excited about our presence, and they loved to practice their English (They also were mesmerized by the digital cameras). The weather was scorching, often reaching 110 degrees in the afternoon! We got a taste of the food and culture of India, and some of us purchased traditional Indian clothing and jewelry. Before departing the country, we spent a couple of days touring the city of Hyderabad, where we visited a Hindu temple and the Golconda Fort. Being immersed in the Indian culture while helping build homes for less fortunate families provided an incredible experience for the entire group.
