This summer, I used my ETW Fellowship to intern with the Institute for Cultural Partnerships in Harrisburg, PA. ICP is a non-profit organization that works to build strong communities by promoting awareness of cultural diversity, encouraging positive inter-group relationships, supporting traditional arts, and helping individuals, groups, and neighborhoods gain access to education, employment, healthcare, and other resources.

Over the course of the internship, I did research and prepared reports on demographic changes in the central Pennsylvania area and on changes to U.S. immigration and refugee policy since September 11, 2001. I wrote profiles of traditional artists who had received grants from ICP, transcribed presentations from ICP's conference in May, and attended meetings of community members and other organizations like ICP. This internship taught me about my own community and others like it around the country, and the challenges and issues that shape them—inter-group tension, shifting social, economic, and cultural demographics, the struggles of immigrants and refugees to integrate and adapt to American society, and the poor health outcomes that often occur in communities of color. Working with ICP gave me the opportunity to participate in projects that deal with these challenges, and work to strengthen and celebrate communities.
