This summer, I interned at Hackensack Riverkeeper, Incorporated (HRI) working to redesign their Water Quality Educational Monitoring Program.  HRI works to protect and preserve the Hackensack River Watershed.  As part of this experience, I assisted in presenting water chemistry workshops to students, attended a conference for science educators, and created numerous curriculum supplements for teachers.  I worked to incorporate more core curriculum standards into the program, which included creating a packet that explains the chemistry behind the water quality tests, as well as a guide with advice on how to write up a final laboratory report.

The internship with HRI was a great way to link the environmental curriculum from Dickinson to my home watershed.  While there are great similarities in the environmental problems faced by everyone, there are also great differences in the problems faced by Central Pennsylvania and Northeastern New Jersey.  I have learned a great deal about my home environment by funding this internship with my Engage the World Fellowship.  I have also met many people in the environmental field who are working hard to make a difference.  Their work has inspired me and continues to give me hope in a field where optimism is necessary.
