Mission of the Education Department of
Dickinson College
The mission of the Education Department of Dickinson College is
to prepare teachers with a strong liberal arts foundation and professional
studies for engaged lives of citizenship and leadership in the service
of society and its children. Consistent with the mission of the
College, the Education Department provides “a useful education
in the context of a liberal arts and sciences curriculum.”
Teacher Education at Dickinson College is characterized by its focus
on developing teachers who have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions
recognized by state and national accrediting bodies as necessary
for successful teaching in contemporary society as well as those
skills and habits of mind deemed by the College as serving students
for a lifetime. Focusing on the application of educational theory
and practice in middle and secondary school settings, the Teacher
Education curriculum is grounded in the traditional disciplines
in which pre-service teachers at Dickinson College major. Pre-service
teachers at Dickinson College are challenged to cross borders pertaining
to culture and belief and to stretch themselves in preparation for
professional lives in a complex world. They are encouraged to reflect
on and engage in educational research and practice—both their
own and that of others—in order to preserve that which is
effective and to improve that which is not. Finally, pre-service
teachers at Dickinson College are encouraged to work within their
chosen profession toward the development of a socially just and
fully democratic world. It is, then, this combination of the traditional
liberal arts and sciences curriculum, contemporary educational theory
and practice, grounded reflection, and engagement with the world
that prepares Dickinson College Teacher Education students for positions
of leadership within their chosen profession and enables them to
contribute to the continuous improvement of education for the benefit
of society and its children.
