Symposium on Health, Law and Justice in Asia

Blumberg Reading Room

Blumberg Reading Room, Waidner-Spahr Library

The Department of East Asian Studies at Dickinson College is hosting an upcoming symposium on “Health, Law and Justice in Asia.” This is the second such symposium hosted by Dickinson College that focuses on the study of law and government in Asia. The first symposium was held in 2004 on the topic of socio-economic rights and justice in China. Both events are sponsored by the Freeman Foundation, which grants about $50 million every year to various organizations and institutions. Through this grant, Dickinson hopes to promote greater study and understanding of Asia.

In light of the recent outbreaks of SARS and avian flu, health issues in Asia are becoming an important topic of study. This symposium seeks to address current issues regarding health care laws and policies in Asia, not only in the way that they relate to massive epidemics, but in how they affect the general population on a daily basis. This symposium addresses a wide range of topics in the field of health and law in Asia, including rural access to health care, health litigation, and policies and treatment toward marginalized groups such as women, people with disabilities, and those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Presiding over the symposium are Neil Diamant, Associate Professor of Asian Law and Culture at Dickinson, who is a multiple recipient of Fulbright and Freeman Grants and Sandra Hyde, Assistant Professor of Medical Anthroplogy at McGill University who has also worked for several health organizations as a public health planner as well as a consultant for several non-governmental organizations. Attending the symposium will be various scholars and experts in the field of law and health in Asia. To view the complete list of participants, please view the Participants link on the left. The symposium will take place on April 28-30, 2006, and will be held in the Blumberg Reading Area of the Waidner-Spahr Library. The symposium is open to the public
