The Campus Beat
The Campus Beat
College Relations is continually on the lookout for story ideas for our various publications and communications. The Campus Beat is a news-sharing program in which members of the College Relations staff are assigned departments with whom they stay in touch to find out what is happening within that department – with faculty, staff or students – in or out of the classroom. The information is then shared within College Relations for possible stories for Extra Features stories, news releases, media pitches, Web features, parent, alumni and prospective student publications and Dickinson Magazine. Some examples of the information we are interested in include stories about student or faculty academic work, student/faculty research, student only or faculty only research, faculty grants/awards/books/research, student awards/scholarships/accomplishments or unusual extracurricular activities by either faculty or students – in other words, all things "newsy" (both serious and fun).
Campus Beat Assignments: Who covers your "beat"?

Media Relations
Media Relations
The Office of Media Relations is Dickinson's source of information for the media, the Dickinson community and the public. The office publicizes events and activities to generate stories featuring the college's faculty, students, staff, alumni and programs. The office responds to requests from reporters for experts on a variety of subjects and for the college's viewpoint on major issues and trends in higher education.
TIP: Media, especially national outlets, are generally less interested in events and speakers unless the events are unusual and the speakers are prominent and not typically accessible. Primarily they are looking for stories that have conflict, are quirky, show a trend (three or more is a trend), have broad appeal, or segment new or interesting research, studies or science (that can show some application). Local media is always looking for ways to localize a national story, find stories that will appeal to their local audience, and reflect what is happening in the community. Because local media has more of a willingness to report on events and speakers, local outlets are sent the most information on events, speakers, and activities on campus. If you have a Dickinson-related story that might interest the news media, or an event that you would like to be publicized, please contact Christine Dugan.
By e-mail: duganc@dickinson.edu or at (717) 245-1289.
Extra Features
EXTRA Features is a biweekly online "publication" that highlights events, activities and people around the college. The staff is always looking for stories on people, programs, projects and accomplishments to share with the Dickinson community. Send your story ideas to : sulonb@dickinson.edu or collinsk@dickinson.edu.
The Compass
The Compass is an electronic bulletin board, updated daily to provide the latest news, events and announcements to the Dickinson community.
Event listings submitted to The Compass are included in the The Morning Rush which is sent to subscribers every morning at 8 a.m., Friday’s Compass e-mail, which is sent to everyone on campus, and the Calendar of Events, which is sent to the media. The staff also uses The Compass as a source for generating news releases about events.
You can review submission guidelines and deadlines and send event information by using the online form.
News Releases
News releases serve as generators for story ideas as well as calendar of events listings in area newspapers. News releases are written and sent to the media highlighting many events and activities on campus. These releases are generally written from the information entered into The Compass. Ideally, releases are sent three weeks in advance of an event for maximum media exposure.
Student writers:
If you are interested in being a student writer for Media Relations, please contact Amy Shank at shanka@dickinson.edu. We typically have two students per semester and you must be work-study eligible.

Alumni and Parent Relations
Alumni and Parent Relations
Dickinson Clubs
Club events provide an opportunity for alumni, parents and friends, in a specific geographical area, to meet on a regular basis for community service andintellectual and social enrichment. Dickinson clubs encourage support for the college through programs such as student recruitment, career placement, community service and professional expertise and advocacy. The clubs enable Dickinson to communicate regularly with alumni, parents and friends, and vice versa.
A cornerstone to club programming is the “Dickinson on the Road” luncheon/dinner/lecture series, which affords alumni, parents and friends of the college around the world an opportunity to hear Dickinson College faculty and administrators speak about their many areas of expertise. If you participate in a club event, a trip may take you away from campus for several hours or several days. The Office of College Relations will make all of the necessary arrangements (and pay) for your travel and accommodations. Speakers derive their topics from their areas of expertise, current research, current events or areas of personal interest. The audience is varied and very responsive to interactive and interesting topics. If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact Rick Delgiorno at delgiorr@dickinson.edu or by phone at (717) 245-1571.

Dickinson magazine
Dickinson Magazine and Print Communication
Submitting News
The award-winning Dickinson Magazine is the college’s primary vehicle of communication with members of the Dickinson community.
The staff strives to provide a breadth of information about faculty, students, staff and alumni. Editorial decisions are based on several factors, including timeliness, interest for a national—not just local—audience and the relationship to a particular theme the magazine is exploring. There are more great stories being generated by Dickinsonians than can possibly be printed within the confines of our magazine. but the staff always likes to hear about what you’re doing. Information is sometimes held for later issues, so please send it along. The staff will also share your news with other publications on campus.
If you have questions or a story idea for the magazine, contact Senior Editor Sherri Kimmel at kimmel@dickinson.edu or (717) 245-1067; or Associate Editor Barbara Stambaugh at stambaub@dickinson.edu or (717) 245-1407.
