Learning Communities are:

  • Interdiscipinary
  • Theme based
  • Collaborative
  • Active learning environments

that

Build community-both academic and social-and provide students who have common interests an opportunity to develop close relationships with their faculty and other students,

and also

Connect classroom theory to applications in the broader world.

Learning Community Activities:

Each Learning Community member can expect to participate in a variety of activities on and off campus that deepen the learning experience. These may include:

  • Field Trips
  • Service Learning Projects
  • Dinner-Discussion Series
  • Weekend Workshops
  • Film Series

In the Fall semester, Learning Community programs are shaped by First Year Seminar faculty working with Learning Community Coordinators (sophomore or junior year students). By the end of the Fall semester, LCC's will encourage and support the formation of student-led Steering Committees, which work with other students in the learning community to plan and implement activities that help meet the goals of their particular community.
