Summer Studio Program

Toulouse is a thriving cultural and commercial center on the Garonne River, just north of the Pyrenees Mountains that separate France from Spain. Its buildings are of pastel brick, giving Toulouse the name La Ville Rose.

A city rich in art and architectural history, Toulouse is home to two of the most famous churches in southern Europe; the Romanesque Basilica St. Sernin, and the Gothic Cathedral of St. Etienne. The wealthy pastel merchants of the Renaissance built elaborately decorated homes, such as the Hotel d'Assezat, now home to the Bemberg Foundation collection of Renaissance, Venetian, and Impressionist Art. Toulouse is also home to over 20 museums of art representing collections from ancient Egypt through the present day.

The Dickinson Study Center in Toulouse, located a short distance from the city center, is in a refurbished villa in a charming park-like setting on the Canal du Midi. It contains large, sunny classrooms, a library, a kitchenette, and a student lounge.

Program Structure

This two-course program, designed for approximately fifteen students, runs from roughly June 12 through July 22 and provides a concentrated six-week study of painting and drawing. The emphasis of the painting part of the course is 'en plein air', while the drawing course focuses on architecture.
