History
Introduction www.dickinson.edu/departments/hist/
Participants in area studies programs, such as American Studies, Russian Studies, Latin American Studies, or in International Studies, can develop concentrations or double majors. Double majors most frequently involve political science, modern languages, economics, and literature, but every year one or more seniors graduate with majors in history and one of the natural sciences.

Scores and Credits that may affect Course Selection
Advanced
Placement scores
Credit is awarded automatically for Advanced Placement examinations in European or American history that receive scores of 4 or 5. European History AP receives credit for HIST 106 and American History AP for HIST118. Since the survey courses in American and European history are not prerequisites for more advanced courses, strictly speaking, we really have no "advanced placement." Credits for AP work count toward the major and may count toward a thematic emphasis within the major.
It is recommended that first-year students take a 100-level course as their first history course because the first-year program should seek to develop skills and to get a feel for what history at the college level is like. A 100-level survey course in European, American, Latin American, Middle Eastern, or Asian History is recommended. First-year students with a strong background in history may consider enrolling in a 200- or 300-level course.
(Prospectus of Fall 2005 offerings: www.dickinson.edu/departments/hist/prospectus/index.htm)
Students who have taken one college history course or scored 4 or 5 on an AP history exam may enroll in HIST 204, Introduction to Historical Methodology.
Students intending to major in History should take HIST 204 early in their careers. This course, which has a prerequisite of one completed course in history, is intended to provide tools -- library research techniques, analysis of primary materials, writing of papers -- that the history student will find helpful throughout his/her college career. History majors intending to study abroad should try to take HIST 204 in the fall semester of the sophomore year and the HIST 304 or 305 in the spring semester of the sophomore year. This is not absolutely necessary, but it creates more flexibility for selecting senior seminars.
