Global Education

Introduction

Study abroad opportunities are coordinated through the Office of Global Education. Approval for participation in Dickinson, Dickinson-Partner and Dickinson-Approved study abroad programs is granted only after careful screening and selection processes. Successful applicants must demonstrate strong academic preparation, one common measure of which is a GPA at or above the college average, and the ability to articulate clearly-formulated goals for their chosen program of study off campus.

Students considering study off campus should visit the Office of Global Education Web site: www.dickinson.edu/global for up-to-date information about Study Abroad.  The handout Ten Top Tips for Study Abroad, available online (www.dickinson.edu/global/preparing/tips.html) and in the Office of Global Education, outlines the general process of preparing to study abroad.

Major Field of Concentration

With careful planning, students in any major may study overseas. Students must have a declared major before studying off campus during the academic year/semester. It is important to plan the schedule for completing the major, and to verify whether courses taken elsewhere will count towards the major. This is best done in consultation with the advisor in the major field.

Distribution requirements

While it is possible to complete some distribution requirements off campus, laboratory sciences, comparative civilizations, languages, and physical education requirements are often difficult to fulfill. Plan to complete these requirements before the end of the sophomore year, as the range of appropriate 100 level courses accessible during the senior year will be limited.

Qualifications for Academic Year/Semester Programs

~ Rising junior or first-semester senior status.

~ Must have a declared major before studying off campus during the academic year/semester.

~ Have a GPA of 2.8 or above. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for some overseas programs; students with lower averages have more limited options.

~ Special requirements for individual programs (such as specific course prerequisites, level of language fluency, field of study).

~ Student disciplinary records are taken into consideration in the selection process.
