Baldridge Reading and Study Skills Program

Learn techniques to increase reading speed, improve comprehension, deepen concentration, and strengthen recall.

Learning Skills Workshops
Workshops are approximately 50 minutes and can be scheduled in the evenings.

Strategies and Workshop Descriptions

 Strategies:

  • Connect with your professors (make sure they know who you are.)
  • Write out goals and post these where you will see them regularly.  Include assigning the grade you will aim for in each class.
  • Find a place and time to study.
  • Study during the day whenever possible.

 Workshops:

  • Time Management
Successful students in college manage their time and goals well.  In this  workshop you will learn to set goals and use time management tools.
  • Study Skills
There are many different ways to take notes.  Notes can be rewritten to use as a study guide.  This workshop will introduce you to the "Cornell Note-taking Method," and offer suggestions for how to get the most from your notes.  To prepare for tests you must do more than expose yourself to the material. This workshop discusses strategies for exposure, review and practice.  You will explore your own learning style and develop strategies to promote active study.
  • APA/MLA (Citing Sources)
Faculty require proper citing and documentation of courses.  Documentation formats for the APA (American Psychological Association) and MLA (Modern Language Association) are covered in this workshop.
  • Stress Management
Staff from the Counseling Center present strategies to set priorities and deal with stress.
  • Motivation
Lack of motivation makes it difficult to set priorities and make "wise choices."  During this workshop you will review your goals, evaluate progress and establish goals for the remainder of the semester.
  • Re-Evaluating Goals
This workshop will help you to evaluate your progress and develop a plan to help you with the remainder of the semester.
