Faculty Opportunities
A global outlook has defined the College since its founding. A focus on global issues pervades the curriculum, cutting across all academic divisions and departments. Over forty percent of all course enrollments are in global dimensions of the academic program.
Dickinson faculty are actively engaged in research on global issues and directly involved in leading our network of global centers--indeed, more than forty percent of Dickinson faculty have led one of the College's global research and study centers or directed a global program, a percentage that no peer institution can claim and one that tangibly demonstrates faculty commitment to the College's global mission. In many ways the strength of the College's Global Study program stands as testament to the creativity, entrepreneurial energy, and global engagement of Dickinson faculty.
Faculty opportunities for involvement in Global Study are many and varied, and they include the following:
Global Study Advisory Committee: The Global Study Advisory Committee (GSAC) was established in 2010 as an official subcommittee of the College-wide Academic Program and Standards Committee. A dynamic group of faculty, with broad expertise and experience (in terms of geographic regions and disciplinary orientation), the GSAC offers counsel and strategic guidance to the Associate Provost and Executive Director of the Center for Global Study and Engagement. The GSAC's charge includes, inter alia, review of new long-term and summer program proposals; review and recommendation of faculty candidates for center directorships abroad; advice and feedback on enhancing the international student experience on campus; review of complex study-abroad applicant files; consultation with study abroad staff regarding non-Dickinson student applications; and consultation on policy considerations related to Global Study at the College. Global Center Directorships: Faculty direct Dickinson’s Centers in Bologna, Norwich (Humanities and Science), and Málaga. Historically, directorships have been for two-year terms. Faculty appointed to a directorship typically serve as the on-campus coordinator for the center they will lead in the two years preceding their tenure abroad. The College provides significant support to faculty interested in these posts, including salary adjustments; moving, transportation, and storage costs; and hosing at the global center.
Mosaics and Globally Integrated Courses: Mosaics and Globally Integrated Courses combine academic work on campus (usually in the form of a course or multiple courses investigating a global issue from various disciplinary perspectives) with research and fieldwork at a global site or multiple global sites. Faculty Study Groups: The Center organizes and supports Faculty Study Groups on contemporary global issues. Past Faculty Study Groups have convened on campus and at our study and research centers abroad. Faculty Study Groups may have various aims and purposes, including building capacity and demonstrating reciprocity with the College’s partners, bringing greater attention in the curriculum to a global issue or set of issues, and/or to laying the foundation and helping to catalyze a major global initiative of the College.
Student-Faculty Research Grants: The Center is committed to expanding opportunities for students to work closely with faculty on global research projects. Many faculty conduct research during the summer, and the Center offers financial support for the direct involvement of students in the global scholarship and research projects of faculty.
Summer Program Proposals: Although Dickinson believes strongly in the benefits of long-term study abroad (i.e., semester and yearlong global programs), each year the College supports a limited slate of summer programs that tie directly to or amplify meaningfully on the home curriculum. All proposals should be submitted to the Global Study Advisory Committee for review and approval by no later than September 1st of the academic year preceding the summer term in which they hope to be implemented. There is a limited pool of Dickinson participants for summer programs. In order to avoid offering more summer programs than the enrollment of the College can support and to ensure academic and geographic breadth of each summer’s offerings, not all proposals may be approved, and some proposals may be approved on the condition that they be offered in a future summer. Guest Speakers on Global Topics: Each year, the Center supports a number of lectures by visiting scholars on topics of global importance. Frequently, the Center partners with academic departments or individual faculty to support scholarly discussion of global issues. Academic Conferences & Symposia on Global Issues: The Center frequently hosts or supports conferences and symposia on topics of global importance -- on the Carlisle campus and at the College’s network of research and study centers. New Faculty Initiatives

Connecting the Centers Development Grants: The global challenges of the 21st century rarely respect national borders (e.g., (im)migration, infectious disease, pollution, trans-border water claims, technology diffusion, etc.). Dickinson’s network of global study and research centers offers students and faculty the opportunity to investigate the ways in which global integrations affect different peoples and nations differently. To help connect the College’s centers in conversation on topics of global importance, the Center supports faculty efforts to develop programs and activities that trace the impact of global forces across our global sites with $1,500 “Connecting the Centers” development grants. Mediterranean Migration is an example of project supported in part through this initiative.
Global Scholars Development Grants: Dickinson faculty in all academic divisions and disciplines are actively engaged in research and scholarship on global issues. Increasingly, students at the undergraduate level must be actively involved in research and scholarship in order to be competitive for admission to elite graduate programs. The Global Scholars initiative supports faculty research at our global centers with $1,500 development grants for projects that involve students directly in faculty research. The program is intended as an honors option. Faculty may set prerequisites for students seeking to participate, the number of students participating in a given project may be limited, and admission may be competitive. Global Scholars: Brisbane is an example of a project supported through this initiative.
