Registration Deadlines:

The following are upcoming internship registration deadlines:

  • Deadline for fall internship registration: September 1
  • Deadline for winter break 2007 internship registration: December 8
  • Deadline for spring 2006 internship registration: December 8

Internship Options:

To receive credit for an internship, students must choose from the following options:

1. Faculty Sponsored Internship for Credit
This is the most common form of obtaining credit. The internship is supervised by a faculty member. Students are responsible for locating a faculty supervisor and will work with that faculty member to develop the academic component of the internship. These internships are graded on a credit/no credit basis.

Steps to obtaining credit:

1. Secure an internship site. The Career Center can assist you with this process. Also see: http://www.dickinson.edu/career/student/resourcesforfindinginternships.html

2. Obtain a faculty supervisor. To get major credit, you must find a faculty member within your department to assign an academic component (in addition to your 120 hours at your site).

3. Fill out and return the registration paperwork. By this time you will have 2 supervisors (your site supervisor and your faculty supervisor). Both must sign the registration form. If your site supervisor is not local, please email Barb Redding at redding@dickinson.edu and ask about your next step. You will also need to indicate what you expect to learn in your internship on the form.

Links to the registration form can be found at the bottom of this page.

NOTE:

  • Students who choose to register for credit will either get a “Credit” or “No Credit” notation on their transcript (students who meet the academic requirements predetermined by their faculty supervisor will receive “Credit.” Students who fail to meet the academic requirements will receive “No Credit”).
  • Because the majority of departments do not allow Pass/Fail courses to count toward major credits, Pass/Fail is not available.

2. Internship Seminar Course
This course is offered only as the need arises. It focuses on professional communication (written and oral). The course is graded as credit/no credit. Check course offerings bulletin for semester and time. Students work at their sites while taking this course.

3. Field Experiences
Some students may prefer to complete a Field Experience, which is a non-credit option. Students may utilize the Career Center for assistance if needed. Same forms are completed as credited options, but students do not need a faculty supervisor to develop the academic component.

Information about Credits

  • Students are allowed to do up to 2 credited internship experiences.
  • Total internship credits cannot exceed 2 credits.
  • A half (.5) credit internship requires at least 60 hours at the site (5-6 hours a week)
  • A one (1) credit internship requires at least 120 hours at the site (10-12 hours a week)
  • A two (2) credit internship requires at least 240 hours at the site (20-24 hours a week)

Hourly requirements are based on minimums. Students are encouraged to do more hours if time permits and should not abruptly stop working at a site when minimums are met. Hours spent on academic work for the internship cannot be counted towards internship hours.
