Dickinson College Job Shadow Program Student Information

A job shadow experience has many benefits for students, including:
• An opportunity to “test” a prospective career-field/occupation
• An opportunity to learn more about your field of interest
• An opportunity to gain experience in your career-field/occupation of interest
• An opportunity to build your network

Job Shadowing typically ranges from a half-day to several-day visit by you to your job shadow site and entails some or all of the following activities:
• One-on-one meeting with job shadow supervisor to:

  • Discuss what it is like to work in that occupation and/or industry
  • Discuss what you should be doing now to be marketable in the field
  • Briefly review your resume and discuss suggestions relevant to the field
  • Hear an overview of the organization
  • Ask them questions. Click here for a list of questions you can ask in this meeting.

• Observation of meetings, phone calls, and day-to-day goings on of the organization
• Meeting(s) with colleagues of the job shadow supervisor
• Participation in workplace activities and/or a minor project(s)
• Tour of the organization

Process of Arranging a Job Shadow Site
• Make an appointment with a Career Counselor to:

  • Discuss your career plans/career exploration
  • Search for potential Job Shadow Sites with a Career Counselor

• Contact potential sites and arrange a job shadow schedule. This is also a good time to discuss possible activities for the day(s) of your Job Shadow experience.
• Fill out a Job Shadow Student Registration form after selecting a site and submit it to the Career Center.
