How to Find a Job

Using a combination of the resources below will help you cover all of your bases during your job search.

NETWORKING

Networking happens everywhere you go - not just at corporate functions. Every time you meet someone new you are networking and making connections that could benefit your job search. Take time to get to know people and let them know the types of jobs you are pursuing. Professors, family members, friends, alumni, and people in the field can be helpful to you. Numerous connections can be made through the following routes:

Dickinson Works an on-line alumni database that connects students and alumni.
Informational Interviews. Meet with someone that works in the field that interests you…not for a job, but to educate yourself on what it is really like to work in the industry.
Internship Sites. Keep in touch with your site supervisor and your colleagues at the site.
Volunteer Experiences. Stay connected with fellow volunteers.
Networking Day an all-day networking event with Dickinson alumni, which usually occurs in February. The event includes an etiquette luncheon, information panels (such as “Surviving Your First Year of Work” or “Graduate School Advice,” and a networking reception in the evening.

RECRUITING PROGRAM

The Career Center has a well-developed Recruiting Program that offers on-campus interviews, resume referrals, and off-campus recruiting events. The Recruiting Program should not be your sole source of job opportunities, but it is a good resource. For more information, visit our Recruiting page.

INTERNET

DickinsonConnect
DickinsonConnect has 3 components:

  1. The Career Center stores all of the internship opportunities available to Dickinson students in DickinsonConnect.
  2. The On-Campus Recruiting program (On-Campus Interviews and Resume Referrals) operates through DickinsonConnect.
  3. Hundreds of employment opportunities are stored in the DickinsonConnect system and are available for Dickinson students to search. Login information is provided on the initial page of the DickinsonConnect site.

Job Search Web Links
Job Search Web Links provide access to a great deal of informational websites and job search engines that are field specific, as well as a long list of general job search engines (such as monster.com). The Job Search Web Links page will provide you with a list of fields that, when clicked on, will bring you to a page with web links specifically related to that field.

JOB FAIRS

Job Fairs are a great way to practice networking and interviewing. However, it is important to remember that, unlike CVC, most of these Job Fairs are open to anyone and everyone. They are going to be very chaotic and you may have to wait in long lines and not have a great deal of time speaking with the employers. Job Fairs are offered all over the country. Most large cities have several job fairs every year. To find a job fair, simply do a search on the internet or go to www.job-hunt.org/fairs.shtml. NEWSPAPERS

The classifieds may seem antiquated, but they are still a source of information for the job market. If you don't get the newspaper for the geographic region in which you would like to work, check to see if it is online. (www.naa.org is a good resource)

PROSPECTIVE CALLING/COLD CALLING

A prospecting call is one where you are taking the initiative to contact a company to determine if they have any job openings, and/or to obtain the name of a person to whom you can send your resume.

Job Bank Books
Available in the Career Center’s resource library, these books list the contact information for some of the top organizations in the nation, by field and geographic region.
On-line Yellow Pages (www.bigyellow.com)

BINDERS IN THE RESOURCE LIBRARY

The resource library has several field-specific binders (Arts, Education, Environmental, Government, International, Non-Profit/Social, Business), in which we put newsletters that announce job vacancies. These newsletters arrive periodically, so be sure to check the binders every few weeks.
