Career Center Resources

Helpful Hints

Use the Career Center!!

• Become familiar with DickinsonConnect! There is a lot of information on the site and you will want to know how to find it quickly.
• Use our library. We have an extensive collection that will help you with your job search.
• Resume and Cover Letter assistance and critiques from our Career Coaches and Professional Staff.
• Refine interviewing techniques- set up a mock interview.
• Research employers and job descriptions.
• Review information on second interviews and job offers.
• Learn what to expect during your transition from college to the world of work.

Get Organized. Keep track of whom you have sent your resume to, when it was sent, what contact you have had with that organization, etc. We recommend you have a Job Search notebook to keep track of all of this information.

Keep an updated resume handy. Once you begin sending out resumes you may want to keep a few copies with you (you never know who you may run into) and have one near the phone (for phone interviews).

Answering Machine & E-mail. Be sure to have a working answering machine with a simple outgoing greeting (ex. You've reached Jane Doe at 555-1212, please leave a message). Some employers have decided not to interview people because of their distasteful outgoing messages. The same goes for your e-mail address. Avoid using addresses that may give an unfavorable impression to employers.
