AND ORGANIZATIONS The organizations listed below either hire teachers
directly or serve as placement agencies to international schools. They can be
an excellent source of employment. To make the best use of their services:
Read the agency's website thoroughly. Note any specific requirements such
as certification or experience. Be sure you meet the requirements as stated.
Fill in the application completely and send any additional information requested
such as letters of reference or transcripts. If possible, specify your country(ies)
of interest, but indicate a willingness to work anywhere in the world to increase
your chance of getting an assignment. Consider the cost of using the agency,
if there is a fee. Find out what the purpose of the fee is and assess whether
it is reasonable or not. If you are at all concerned about the reliability of
an agency, contact the Better Business Bureau in the area where the agency is
located and ask if any complaints have been filed against the agency. You can
also "google" the agency's name with the word "problem" and see what shows up.
Be on guard with international search firms and agencies, particularly if
your only knowledge of them is through a classified ad in the newspaper. There
are a lot of scams in this field. Register for any hiring fairs the organization
offers. When you attend the fair, you will need to bring multiple copies of your:

Teaching English as a Second
Language (TESL, TEFL, and TESOL)
Obtaining a TESL, TEFL, or
TESOL certificate can help immeasurably in your international job search. Many
language schools abroad will only hire university graduates who have the TEFL
certificates (although there are exceptions by country; Turkey, for example).
Worldwide vacancies exist for qualified teachers. Many of the agencies and institutions
which offer the certificate also maintain placement files or run recruitment fairs
to help you with finding employment. There is a high demand for services
in Eastern Europe although wages are lower. Areas which welcome US citizens
include Turkey, Egypt, Japan, China, Taiwan, South America and Africa. If
you're planning to teach in Europe, contact the individual language schools. A
background in American business. English is helpful. The American-based courses
are designed with American speakers in mind; the British with British English.
